Bold claim — my Victron MPPT alone took an hour just to find the Bluetooth signal. 😄

Honestly though, if anyone's actually pulled off a full 5kW system in 60 minutes I'd love to see the footage, because I spent the better part of a long Bank Holiday weekend just arguing with my Fogstar cells about which way round the busbars went.

The "1 hour" thing is obviously clickbait territory, but there's a genuine conversation buried underneath it — how streamlined can the process actually get? Pre-wired battery banks, plug-and-play inverter combos, pre-crimped Anderson connectors... the kit has genuinely got better. My first build looked like a spaghetti junction substation. My second was almost respectable.

A few things I'd argue still eat your time no matter how slick your components are:

  • Roof penetrations (never, ever quick)
  • Cable runs that are actually tidy
  • Getting your Victron settings dialled in properly rather than just hoping for the best
  • The inevitable trip to Screwfix because you miscounted cable glands

So — has anyone here actually done a genuinely fast install that they'd stand behind as safe and properly rated? Or is it all just YouTube pacing and clever editing?

Genuinely curious whether there's a repeatable method here or if it's always a "however long it takes" job.

@BC_Boats Ha — my Victron took 20 minutes just to update its firmware before it would even think about doing any actual solar work. Cheeky little box.

The "1 hour" claim is pure YouTube bait, obviously. In reality you're looking at:

  • Cable sizing calculations alone = 30 mins if you're doing it properly
  • Fusing every string correctly = another chunk
  • Earthing/bonding (which half these builds completely skip 🙄)
  • Victron MPPT programming with appropriate absorption/float voltages

My 4.8kW system on the tiny house took three solid weekends to do safely — and I still found a loose MC4 connector six months later that could've been exciting in the wrong direction.

Anyone claiming 60 minutes either has a very loose definition of "finished" or a very enthusiastic definition of "safe."

@BC_Boats 😄 The "1 Hour" claim always makes me chuckle. Even if you've pre-crimped every cable, pre-configured every setting, and laid everything out in a perfect grid on the garage floor the night before — you're still going to spend 20 minutes hunting for the torque wrench you definitely left on the workbench.

I did a 4.8kW install last spring and kept a rough log out of curiosity. Cable routing alone was nearly two hours, and that was with a mate helping. The actual electrical connections were the quick bit ironically!

I suspect these "1 hour" videos involve a lot of creative editing and skipping over the unsexy bits — conduit, earthing, labelling, checking everything twice. You know, the stuff that actually keeps your shed from burning down. 🔥

@BC_Boats To be fair, I once timed myself installing a basic 12V setup in my shepherd's hut — pre-drilled holes, pre-run cables, components literally laid out in order like a surgical theatre. Took four hours. And that was just the DC side. The moment you introduce a Victron MPPT into proceedings, time becomes a theoretical concept. It's less "install" and more "negotiation."

The real kicker with these clickbait titles is they're always filmed in California where the sun cooperates and nobody's stood on a ladder in horizontal Derbyshire drizzle wondering if their Fogstar battery will arrive before their will to live does.

That said, I have seen a pre-built plug-and-play unit deployed in about 90 minutes for emergency backup purposes. Key word: pre-built. By someone else. Weeks earlier.

@BC_Boats Welcome to the forum — great first post!

I did my van build over about three weekends, and even then I felt rushed. The wiring alone between my Fogstar battery, the Victron SmartSolar and the distribution board took the better part of a Saturday — mostly because I kept second-guessing my fuse sizing and redoing things properly rather than "good enough."

I think these "1 hour" videos exist in a universe where:

  • Everything arrives pre-labelled
  • Cable runs are suspiciously short
  • Nobody stops to check polarity twice (and then a third time)

The honest version would be a 14-hour video with a lunch break and at least one trip to Screwfix.

Stick around — there's a wealth of real-world experience here, and folks are genuinely helpful when you're mid-build and panicking at 11pm over a wiring diagram. 🙂
