Been down a similar rabbit hole recently while speccing up the power system for my garden office build, so this feels timely.
My current setup is a single MultiPlus-II 48/5000 with ESS, an EM24 on the incomer, and a Fogstar Drift 48V battery pack — all running on single-phase 230V from the house supply. Works brilliantly for what it is.
But I've been wondering whether there's any real-world benefit in going three-phase when your grid input is single-phase. Specifically:
- Can a 3-phase Victron ESS actually charge efficiently from a single-phase incomer, or does the system get lopsided trying to balance across phases that don't all have supply?
- If only one phase has grid presence, do the other two MultiPlus units just sit there twiddling their thumbs in island mode?
- And does ESS grid-assist logic behave sensibly, or does it start doing odd things with phase compensation?
The reason I'm even asking is that a mate with a larger cabin is considering a 3-phase setup purely for future-proofing — he wants to run a small workshop with a lathe and a compressor. The three-phase motor argument makes sense, but his DNO connection is firmly single-phase.
Has anyone here actually run a 3-phase Victron ESS fed from a single-phase grid? Curious whether the Cerbo GX handles the phase imbalance gracefully or whether it becomes a configuration nightmare.
Would love to hear from anyone who's been through the Victron ESS assistant settings on this — particularly with VE.Bus comms across multiple units.
