Can Victron help a genset with an unbalanced load?

Running into an interesting issue with my setup and wondering if anyone has experience with this.

Background: I'm currently spec'ing out a system for a fairly large property — not quite a country estate, but a big old farmhouse with outbuildings. The site uses a three-phase diesel genset (a Pramac 20kVA unit) as the primary backup when mains fails, which on this rural grid happens more than you'd think.

The problem is load balancing across the three phases. The property has a mix of single-phase loads — kitchen, workshop machinery, EV charger — and they're distributed pretty unevenly. When the genny kicks in, certain phases get hammered while others are barely tickling. The genset doesn't love this and it shows in the engine behaviour; you can hear it hunting under the uneven load.

The question: Can a Victron Quattro (or a bank of them in three-phase configuration) actively assist with balancing loads across the phases? My thinking is that the inverter/chargers could essentially shuffle energy around — drawing from the battery bank to prop up the heavy phases and perhaps absorbing excess on the lighter ones — effectively presenting the genset with a more balanced load profile.

I've seen Victron's documentation mention "generator support" mode and I know the ESS assistant can do clever things, but I can't find anything specifically addressing phase balancing as a deliberate function rather than a side effect.

Has anyone actually implemented something like this? Particularly interested in real-world results rather than what looks good on paper. Would a Cerbo GX with proper configuration make a meaningful difference here?

Short answer: yes, Victron kit (particularly the Quattro range) can actively balance loads across phases and assist a generator that's struggling with uneven demand. The Quattro's PowerAssist function is genuinely clever here — it can top up from batteries when the genset is being pushed unevenly, effectively smoothing things out.

That said, the generator side matters enormously. Single-phase vs three-phase changes everything.

Keen to hear more detail about your setup before giving specific advice, but the short answer is yes — Victron's MultiPlus-II and Quattro units can absolutely help with load balancing on a genset. The key feature you're after is Power Assist, which lets the inverter/charger make up the difference when the generator is being pushed unevenly or approaching its limits. If you're running three-phase, a properly configured three-phase MultiPlus setup with ESS can do a lot of the heavy lifting. That said, the devil's really in the detail with these things — generator kVA rating, power factor, and how your loads are distributed all matter quite a bit. What size genset are you looking at, and are we talking single or three-phase here?

@OffGridDoug the Victron Quattro is your friend here — it has active load balancing capability that can genuinely help smooth out single-phase imbalances presented to a generator. The AC input power assist feature means Victron can add battery power to whichever leg is struggling, reducing the effective imbalance the genset sees.

That said, I'd be cautious about treating it as a magic fix. I've run a similar arrangement in my motorhome conversion and the Quattro is brilliant at masking problems, but if your underlying load imbalance is severe, you're still flogging the generator inefficiently.

Worth also considering a three-phase Quattro stack if the property genuinely warrants it — Victron's VE.Bus parallel/three-phase configuration is rock solid from what I've seen on larger installs.

What's your anticipated load split looking like? That'll determine whether this is a minor tweak or a more fundamental design issue.

What @LiFePO4Nerd said about the Quattro is spot on, but I'll add a real-world angle — I ran into something similar when I first wired up Doris (my van, yes she has a name).

The generator was grumbling like a tired uncle at Christmas because one phase was doing all the heavy lifting. The Quattro essentially acts as a buffer, smoothing out those peaks and letting the genny breathe a bit more evenly.

For a property-scale setup, you might also want to look at Victron's ESS (Energy Storage System) configuration — it lets the batteries absorb those load spikes rather than the generator having to respond instantly. Keeps your fuel consumption down too, which your wallet will appreciate.

What generator are you running? Make and size matters quite a lot here for how aggressively the Quattro can compensate.

Worth adding — the ESS assistant in VE.Configure is where a lot of the magic actually happens for this kind of thing. The Quattro hardware is great but you need the assistant set up properly or it won't manage the genset interaction the way you're hoping.

Had a similar head-scratch moment on my static caravan setup when the genset kept struggling under asymmetric loads. Turned out my ESS settings were basically doing nothing useful. Once I got the PowerAssist thresholds dialled in correctly, the Quattro started buffering those spikes from battery and the genset stopped hunting.

@OffGridDoug what generator are you actually running? Some older units don't play nicely with Victron's feedback regardless of settings — worth knowing before you go too deep down the rabbit hole.
