Running into an interesting issue with my setup and wondering if anyone has experience with this.
Background: I'm currently spec'ing out a system for a fairly large property — not quite a country estate, but a big old farmhouse with outbuildings. The site uses a three-phase diesel genset (a Pramac 20kVA unit) as the primary backup when mains fails, which on this rural grid happens more than you'd think.
The problem is load balancing across the three phases. The property has a mix of single-phase loads — kitchen, workshop machinery, EV charger — and they're distributed pretty unevenly. When the genny kicks in, certain phases get hammered while others are barely tickling. The genset doesn't love this and it shows in the engine behaviour; you can hear it hunting under the uneven load.
The question: Can a Victron Quattro (or a bank of them in three-phase configuration) actively assist with balancing loads across the phases? My thinking is that the inverter/chargers could essentially shuffle energy around — drawing from the battery bank to prop up the heavy phases and perhaps absorbing excess on the lighter ones — effectively presenting the genset with a more balanced load profile.
I've seen Victron's documentation mention "generator support" mode and I know the ESS assistant can do clever things, but I can't find anything specifically addressing phase balancing as a deliberate function rather than a side effect.
Has anyone actually implemented something like this? Particularly interested in real-world results rather than what looks good on paper. Would a Cerbo GX with proper configuration make a meaningful difference here?
