Chasing down a low frequency solar inverter charger. Split phase, 10-12kw, cheap. powmr, mpp, etc.

Right so this rabbit hole nearly broke me last winter when I was speccing up power for the shepherd's hut and a proper garden office on the same site.

The MPP Solar units kept coming up — specifically the PIP-5048MK and the bigger stacked configurations. Pricing looks almost too good and that's where my brain starts twitching. The community support on places like this forum is decent though, which counts for a lot when you're 200 metres from the nearest socket.

PowMr I looked at briefly but couldn't find enough real-world UK installs to feel comfortable. Anyone running one through a proper British winter with a heat pump load? That's the stress test I care about.

One thing worth flagging — if you're chasing split phase for genuine 240/120 configuration, just double-check what you actually need in a UK context. Split phase is very much a North American thing. Most of us here want straight 230V single phase or possibly a proper three-phase setup. Got burned by this assumption early on and nearly ordered completely the wrong unit.

For the budget end I keep coming back to whether Victron's secondhand market is worth exploring before committing to the cheaper Chinese alternatives. A battered Quattro from a boat refit often works out similar money to a new PowMr and the Victron ecosystem with VictronConnect and Cerbo GX is genuinely worth the premium if you're also doing EV charging management.

What's the actual intended load here — is this residential-scale or more of a compound/smallholding situation? That changes everything about which direction I'd point you.

@VivaroNomad mate I felt that "nearly broke me" energy in my soul 😅

Split phase is a proper faff to source in the UK — we're not exactly swimming in 120/240V demand here. Worth double-checking whether you actually need split phase or if you've gone down an American YouTube rabbit hole at 2am (

@VivaroNomad been down a similar rabbit hole trying to spec EV charging alongside my static caravan setup.

Few things worth clarifying before you commit:

  • Split phase 120/120V is a US standard — are you actually needing that, or would a 230V single phase or three-phase unit suit better for UK grid-tie/backup?
  • If genuinely off-grid and split phase is needed (e.g., imported US equipment on site), MPP Solar PIP series does work but support is patchy
  • Victron Multiplus-II units can be paralleled or configured for split-phase but the cost jumps considerably
  • Powmr — seen mixed reliability reports at higher loads, worth checking sustained output vs peak ratings carefully

What's the actual load breakdown driving the 10-12kW figure? Sometimes two separate Victron 5kW units paralleled makes more sense than chasing one cheap unit that might underdeliver.

@VivaroNomad ran almost exactly this scenario for my shepherd's hut plus workshop last year. Ended up abandoning the split-phase chase entirely — genuinely not worth the grief for UK installs unless you've got specific 240V/120V split requirements, which most of us haven't.

What actually solves the problem properly:

Two Victron Multiplus-II 5kVA units configured in parallel. Yes, it costs more upfront than a PowMr. No, you won't be debugging firmware at midnight in a field.

The MPP LV6548 units look attractive on paper but sourcing warranty support from the UK when something goes wrong is a nightmare — and something will go wrong.

For your hut-plus-office load profile, I'd also look hard at whether you actually need inverter capacity that large, or whether proper load management (Victron Cerbo GX handles this well) lets you get away with smaller units entirely.

@VivaroNomad split phase in the UK is a solution looking for a problem unless you're actually running genuine 240-0-240 American kit, which I'd wager you're not.

For a static caravan plus garden office combo I just ran two separate Victron Multiplus-II units in parallel — boring, expensive, works — rather than faffing about with PowMR firmware that was last updated when Boris was still pretending to be competent.

The MPP LV6548 gets thrown around a lot on these threads but the support is essentially a Facebook group arguing in broken English at 2am.

What's your actual load list? Because "10-12kW" for a shepherd's hut sounds like someone's running a hot tub and calling it off-grid living.

@ForestDaz "a solution looking for a problem" — mate that's practically the tagline for my entire off-grid journey 😂

Seriously though, I spent three weeks building a spreadsheet to justify split phase before realising my "massive loads" were a kettle, a laptop, and a NAS box that could've run off a decent Victron
