Been down this exact rabbit hole when speccing out my van build last year, so thought I'd share what I found.

Most of the Chinese-manufactured cells you'll encounter in the UK are actually sold under rebranded names — Fogstar being the obvious one that gets thrown around constantly here. Their Drift LiFePO4 batteries are built on EVE or CATL cells and they play nicely with Victron kit once you sort the communication settings properly.

The key thing with pairing any lithium battery to a Victron MultiPlus or Quattro is whether you want proper CAN bus or VE.Bus comms, or whether you're happy running it in standalone mode with careful charge voltage settings. I ran a Fogstar 200Ah without comms for eight months with no drama — just programmed the absorption and float voltages correctly in VictronConnect.

Brands worth researching for UK buyers:

  • Fogstar Drift (very popular here, good support)
  • Pylontech (technically Chinese, widely used with Victron ESS setups)
  • EG4 / Jakiper (less common but appearing more)

Pylontech is arguably the gold standard for plug-and-play Victron integration — there's a proper supported protocol and Victron even lists compatible firmware versions on their site.

What's your actual setup — van, static cabin, home ESS? That changes the recommendation quite a bit. A van build where space is tight is a different conversation from a static system where you can stack Pylontechs in a cabinet.

Anyone else running Chinese cells with their Victron gear — what's been your experience with BMS communication? Curious whether the native CAN bus route is actually worth the faff over standalone.

Worth adding to whatever you were about to say: the brand distinction matters less than the cell tier. Whether it's Fogstar Drift, EG4, or a raw CATL cell in a branded case, you want Grade A cells with proper cycle count documentation.

On my boat I run Fogstar lithium paired with a Victron MultiPlus, and the BMS communication side is where most people come unstuck with Chinese packs — not all of them speak Victron's DVCC protocol properly without a separate CAN interface or some fiddling in VEConfigure.

For emergency backup use specifically, I'd prioritise documented BMS cutoff behaviour over headline capacity ratings. A pack that silently fails mid-outage is worse than a smaller, predictable one.

To fill in likely gaps: most Chinese cells reaching the UK market are either CATL, EVE, or CALB manufactured, then rebadged by assemblers. Grade A vs B vs "A+" labelling is largely unregulated marketing.

Key things I'd verify before buying:

  • QR code traces back to the original cell manufacturer
  • Capacity matches rated spec under actual load (not just resting voltage)
  • BMS communication is actually compatible with Victron's DVCC protocol if you want proper integration — many cheap BMS units claim compatibility but aren't

Running Fogstar Drift 200Ah units on my narrowboat paired with a Victron Multiplus-II. The Victron-native BMS comms genuinely matters for charge control — without it you're essentially flying blind on cell-level protection.

Don't cheap out on the BMS side specifically.

@ValleyOffGrid's post getting eaten is classic forum gremlin behaviour — happened to me twice on this very board.

To fill the probable gap: most Chinese cells arrive here via distributors rebranding EVE, CATL, or CALB cells under their own label. Quality varies wildly depending on which grade of cell you're actually getting — A-grade, B-grade, or the dreaded "pulled from packs" cells that get dressed up nicely.

Running a Victron MultiPlus myself, the key thing I'd stress is BMS compatibility. Victron's ecosystem talks DVCC beautifully with a proper CAN-bus BMS — I use a Daly, though I've since eyed up the Fogstar Drift units which handle this much more elegantly out of the box.

Don't just buy cells — buy the communication stack around them. That's where cheap builds fall apart.

Happened to me last month — lost a whole breakdown of my Fogstar Drift cell testing results mid-post.

To actually add something useful while @ValleyOffGrid presumably rewrites: the key thing I learned speccing my tiny house system was that the cell origin matters less than the BMS quality and how well it communicates with Victron kit.

My setup runs cells that started life in a Chinese factory, repackaged under a European brand, talking to a Victron Multiplus via a decent JK BMS with a VE.Can adaptor — works flawlessly.

The rabbit hole @ValleyOffGrid mentions is real though. You'll chase datasheets across three continents before realising the actual differentiator is whether your BMS can properly hand off charge control to the Cerbo GX.
