Anyone else tackled swapping out a charger on a motorhome setup where there's already a power distribution node in the mix?

I'm looking at replacing my existing unit with a Victron IP22 12/30 and I'm a bit skeptical about how cleanly it'll integrate. The previous owner had some generic distribution block wired in, and I'm not entirely convinced it was done properly in the first place — classic boat-brain thinking carried over to a van build.

My main concerns:

  • Load output sequencing — does the IP22 play nicely if there's a managed node sitting between it and the battery bank, or will it confuse the charge algorithm?
  • Sense wiring — worth running separate voltage sense cables directly to the battery terminals rather than trusting whatever the node is measuring?
  • Cable sizing through the node — I've seen these distribution blocks become genuine bottlenecks, especially if the original installer skimped on cross-section

I've used the IP22 on my cabin setup and it's been rock solid there, but that's a dead simple install — straight to a Fogstar LiFePO4 bank, no intermediary hardware. The motorhome environment feels messier.

Would be curious whether anyone's run a Victron charger through a third-party distribution node and whether they bothered connecting to the VE.Smart network for battery temperature compensation, or just left it on the default charge profile.

Feels like one of those jobs that looks straightforward on paper but unravels once you're actually behind the panel.

@RelayNomad mate the IP22 12/30 is basically the Toyota Land Cruiser of chargers — overkill in the best possible way, just wire it in and forget about it for a decade.

@RelayNomad I've not used that specific ArSilicii node but the general principle should be straightforward. The IP22 12/30 outputs to your main positive bus — the power distribution node just sits downstream of that, so the charger doesn't really "see" it directly.

Main thing I'd check is whether the TTK node has a maximum continuous current rating that matches your expected load profile. 30A charging plus simultaneous loads could push things if the node's undersized.

Also worth connecting the IP22 to a Victron SmartShunt if you haven't already — you'll get much better charge state data via Bluetooth rather than guessing. Makes a real difference for monitoring when you're away from the vehicle.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your current setup? That'd make it easier to give more specific advice on where the charger output ties in.

@RelayNomad the bit nobody mentions with the IP22 12/30 is that its absorption and float voltages need to match whatever the POWER-LINK node expects to see — if the node has its own battery management logic, you can end up with both devices fighting over charge state decisions. Worth checking whether the ArSilicii unit has a dedicated charger input with voltage sensing or just treats it as a raw DC feed. The IP22 has a VE.Direct port, so if you're running any Victron ecosystem kit alongside it you can at least monitor what it's actually doing. Also confirm your wiring gauge to the node — 30A sustained through undersized cable in a motorhome environment gets unpleasant quickly. What battery chemistry are you running? That'll determine whether the IP22's default profile needs adjusting before you even connect anything.

Never used that ArSilicii node specifically but I've got the IP22 12/30 on my narrowboat and it's rock solid. One thing worth checking — the POWER-LINK 2 TTK, does it have its own fusing on the input side? Because the IP22 can push a decent chunk of current and if that node isn't rated for it you'll have a bad time.

Also @24V_Queen makes a fair point on voltages, but don't forget the IP22 has the VictronConnect app integration — makes tweaking charge profiles dead easy without crawling into a cupboard with a screwdriver.

What battery chemistry are you running? That'll dictate most of the setup decisions anyway.

Bit of a different context but I'm also running the IP22 12/30 on a narrowboat, so same charger at least. One thing that caught me out early on — the three-output capability sounds great on paper but are you planning to use all three simultaneously? I found the current gets split across outputs and it wasn't immediately obvious from the manual how that affects charge times when you've got multiple battery banks connected. Worth checking before you wire everything into that distribution node. Also, does the ArSilicii unit have any kind of current limiting on its input side? That could interact oddly with the IP22's bulk phase if it's pushing the full 30A through.
