Been through this exact moment on my narrowboat a couple of years back — that mix of excitement and mild terror when everything's wired up and you're about to throw the switch for the first time.
A few things I'd flag from my own commissioning experience:
Before you energise anything:
- Double-check all torque settings on your busbar connections. Victron's own documentation lists these and they're worth following precisely — loose connections cause more grief than almost anything else
- Photograph every connection before closing panels. You'll thank yourself six months later
On the Victron side specifically:
- Go through VictronConnect before you connect the batteries if you can. Get your battery parameters set correctly for your specific cells — the default settings won't necessarily suit lithium out of the box
- Set your charge voltages conservatively at first. You can always nudge them up once you've seen how the system behaves over a few cycles
The bit people often skip:
Run your first load test with something modest and watch the BMV or Cerbo readings carefully for 20–30 minutes. You're looking for anything unexpected in voltage drop or temperature.
My commissioning threw up a dodgy earth connection I'd have missed otherwise — the system "worked" but the numbers just looked slightly off. Glad I caught it early rather than after a winter of underperformance.
What components are you pairing the batteries with? Knowing the rest of the system would help people here give more specific pointers. Quite a few of us have run 12v lithium setups on boats so there's decent collective experience to draw on.
