Been running a 48V system on my narrowboat for about 18 months now and the golf cart battery market has genuinely exploded with options. Worth putting together a proper comparison because there's a lot of noise out there.

From what I've tested and read across this forum, the main contenders seem to be:

  • Fogstar Drift 48V – solid BMS, great UK support
  • Fogstar Drift 48V 100Ah – the beefier sibling
  • Generic LiFePO4 packs from Amazon/AliExpress – buyer beware territory

Key things I'd actually look at beyond the headline capacity figures:

  1. BMS continuous discharge rating – golf cart duty cycles are brutal, narrowboat inverter loads aren't much kinder
  2. Low-temperature cutoff – critical for winter moorings, ask me how I know 😅
  3. Bluetooth monitoring – non-negotiable for me personally, Victron integration via CANBUS is the gold standard
  4. Cell chemistry – LiFePO4 or nothing as far as I'm concerned for static/marine use

One thing that genuinely surprised me was how much the internal resistance figures varied between supposedly identical-spec batteries from different suppliers.

Anyone else running these in a non-golf cart application? Curious whether the 48V packs play nicely with Victron Multiplus setups without needing a separate battery monitor. Had mixed results on my boat before I sorted the comms properly.

Would love to hear from the van conversion crowd too – weight distribution must be interesting with these chunkier packs.

Really useful thread @ExSquaddie49 — been eyeing up the golf cart battery route for my narrowboat build and the choice is overwhelming.

Quick question that might be worth covering in your comparison: how do these golf cart packs handle partial state of charge over extended periods? On a narrowboat you're often sitting at 50-70% SOC for days if you're not plugged in and solar is limited in winter.

Also curious whether any of the 48V options you've looked at have proper CAN bus comms compatible with Victron kit — I've been running a Fogstar Drift on a smaller system and the integration is brilliant, but I'm not sure the golf cart market has caught up there yet.

Are you finding meaningful differences in the BMS quality between the cheaper Chinese units versus the brands with actual UK support?

Worth noting that golf cart form factor is a bit of a lottery for actual cycle life claims. Seen plenty of 48V packs marketed at 2000+ cycles that are clearly using B-grade cells.

If you're fitting these on a narrowboat specifically, check the IP rating before anything else. Most golf cart cases weren't designed with bilge humidity in mind and the BMS connections are often poorly sealed at that price point.

Been running Fogstar Drift cells in a custom pack on my boat rather than going the pre-built golf cart route for exactly that reason — at least you know what you're getting inside.

@BerlingoConvert for a narrowboat build I'd seriously consider whether the golf cart form factor actually suits the space you've got. Awkward dimensions once you're working around frames and bulkheads.

Great thread @ExSquaddie49. One thing worth flagging that I haven't seen mentioned yet — the physical dimensions can catch you out badly on narrowboats specifically. Golf cart batteries are designed around a fairly standardised footprint, but the height varies enormously between manufacturers, and if you're fitting under a cratch board or into an engine bay void you can find yourself 20mm short with no wiggle room.

Learned this the hard way last summer. Measured the cavity, checked the spec sheet, ordered the batteries, and the terminal posts added enough height to make it a proper nightmare.

Always measure to the top of the terminals, not just the case height. Sounds obvious but it's nowhere on most spec sheets without digging through the full datasheet PDF.

Quick question for anyone who's done it — how are these packs handling partial state of charge cycling? My use case means I'm rarely doing full cycles, more like sitting at 60-80% and occasionally getting hammered down to 30% during a power cut.

I've been looking at Fogstar's offerings but also wondering whether the golf cart BMS units bundled with cheaper packs can handle irregular cycling without degrading faster than advertised. @BodgeItAndScarper's point about cycle life claims has me a bit nervous — are there any brands where the real-world figures actually hold up to scrutiny? Anyone got capacity test data after 12+ months of irregular use?
