Running a Victron Multiplus on my narrowboat and the ATS integration was the bit that nearly broke me — turns out the transfer relay timing was fighting with my shore power inlet like two ducks arguing over the same bit of bread.
Few things worth chucking into the discussion:
- Pre-charge delay matters — if your inverter/charger tries to take over too fast before the ATS has fully switched, you'll get a lovely relay chatter that'll age you prematurely
- Neutral switching vs. switched-live only — a lot of cheap ATS units only break the live, which causes all sorts of grief with certain inverter/charger combos (Victron being particularly fussy about a clean neutral)
- Generator integration — if you're running a genny alongside solar, the ATS priority stack needs thinking through properly or you'll be scratching your head wondering why your Multiplus is trying to charge from itself
What inverter/charger are you going with? The Victron ecosystem makes ATS integration relatively painless once you're in VE.Configure, but brands like Growatt or Renogy can be a bit more agricultural about how they handle the handoff.
Also curious whether you're doing a hard-wired ATS or one of the DIN-rail units — the latter made my installation about 40% less of a nightmare.
