Really interesting situation and one I suspect more of us are going to run into as newer vans ship with increasingly complex factory electrical architectures.

I've been researching a similar setup for a MAN TGE-based tiny house build and the dual Orion XS pairing with a smart alternator is something I keep coming back to. My concern is specifically around the current sensing and charge profile coordination between the two units when the alternator is already managing its own variable voltage output.

A few questions I'd genuinely like the community to weigh in on:

  • Has anyone successfully run two Orion XS units in parallel off a single smart alternator without them fighting each other for input current?
  • Do both units need to be on the same VE.Smart network, or does Victron's ecosystem handle the arbitration automatically?
  • Is there a case for using a DC-DC isolator relay upstream of both Orions to give the alternator a cleaner load profile?

My leisure bank is Fogstar Drift 100Ah lithium cells in a 2S2P arrangement, so getting the charge termination right is non-negotiable — a miscommunication between the Orions and the BMS could be genuinely damaging.

I've seen some conflicting advice on the Victron Community forum but nothing specific to the TGE's 2026 smart alternator variant. Anyone here had hands-on experience with this, or know a competent auto-electrician in the Midlands who's dealt with this kind of dual-converter topology?

Mate, the MAN TGE's smart alternator is basically a toddler having a tantrum — the Orion XS handles the mood swings beautifully once you nail the input voltage thresholds, had similar grief on the narrowboat with a Volvo Penta before I just let Victron sort it.

@FormerMechanic43 analogy aside, the more important thing nobody's addressed yet is the dual Orion XS synchronisation problem.

Two XS units on a single smart alternator output without proper configuration will fight each other during the alternator's load-response cycles. You need to either:

  • Link them via the VE.Direct daisy-chain so Victron's algorithm treats them as a single logical charger
  • Or stagger their input current limits deliberately to let one unit "lead"

The MAN TGE 2026's 48V mild-hybrid architecture (if fitted) complicates this further — the DC/DC conversion stage means your apparent alternator voltage seen at the Orion inputs isn't a clean signal.

Done something similar on my shepherd's hut mobile setup with a single XS and it required considerable faffing with VictronConnect's absorption thresholds before the BMS on my Fogstar Drift stopped throwing protection faults during vehicle load transients.

What's your actual battery chemistry and BMS spec?

@SolarNotSure raises the critical point here. With dual Orion XS units, you must ensure they're both seeing the same enable signal — if one wakes before the other you can get asymmetric charging that confuses the BMS.

On the MAN TGE's smart alternator specifically, I'd check whether your vehicle has the recuperation/energy management system active (common on 2026 models). This can drop alternator output to near zero during deceleration, and if your Orion XS units have different input voltage thresholds configured, they may cut out at different times.

A few questions:

  • Are both Orion XS units networked via VE.Direct or running independently?
  • What's your LiFePO4 capacity? (relevant for whether a single unit would suffice)
  • Have you logged the alternator voltage profile yet?

For my static caravan EV charging setup I don't face this, but I've been researching dual B2B configs thoroughly for a future van build.

@BlownFuse is right but nobody's mentioned the elephant in the room — if your MAN TGE 2026 has the variable voltage alternator and the starter battery management system doing its own clever thing, you've essentially got three systems all trying to be in charge simultaneously, which in my static caravan backup world we'd call "a right mess." Make absolutely certain your Victron VE.Bus comms between the two Orion XS units are properly configured before you connect anything — I've seen people skip that step and end up with one unit fighting the other like two stubborn blokes over the TV remote.

@ForestDaz has hit on something crucial there. The variable voltage alternator issue on the TGE 2026 is what I'd actually start diagnosing first before anything else. I ran into almost identical grief on a Ford Transit Custom with EFB stop-start last year — the Orion XS was constantly dropping in and out because it was interpreting the alternator's load management voltage drops as a "charging stopped" signal.

Worth checking whether Victron's latest firmware (v1.10 onwards I believe) has improved the input voltage threshold sensitivity, because the older versions really struggled with anything below about a 400ms stabilisation window. Has anyone confirmed what firmware @OakSoul is actually running? That could explain a lot before we go pulling the whole setup apart looking for a synchronisation fault.
