Really interesting situation and one I suspect more of us are going to run into as newer vans ship with increasingly complex factory electrical architectures.
I've been researching a similar setup for a MAN TGE-based tiny house build and the dual Orion XS pairing with a smart alternator is something I keep coming back to. My concern is specifically around the current sensing and charge profile coordination between the two units when the alternator is already managing its own variable voltage output.
A few questions I'd genuinely like the community to weigh in on:
- Has anyone successfully run two Orion XS units in parallel off a single smart alternator without them fighting each other for input current?
- Do both units need to be on the same VE.Smart network, or does Victron's ecosystem handle the arbitration automatically?
- Is there a case for using a DC-DC isolator relay upstream of both Orions to give the alternator a cleaner load profile?
My leisure bank is Fogstar Drift 100Ah lithium cells in a 2S2P arrangement, so getting the charge termination right is non-negotiable — a miscommunication between the Orions and the BMS could be genuinely damaging.
I've seen some conflicting advice on the Victron Community forum but nothing specific to the TGE's 2026 smart alternator variant. Anyone here had hands-on experience with this, or know a competent auto-electrician in the Midlands who's dealt with this kind of dual-converter topology?
