There's a particular kind of paralysis that sets in when you've got several hundred pounds' worth of new kit sitting on the floor of your narrowboat and you're not entirely sure how it all connects together safely.
I went through exactly this when I integrated a Cerbo GX into my setup last spring. The Cerbo sits between your Victron components — it's a communications hub, not a power-path device, which is a distinction that genuinely matters. It doesn't carry current between your battery bank and inverter; it just talks to everything via VE.Can or VE.Direct cables. Knowing that took a surprising amount of stress out of the installation for me.
A few things worth being precise about:
- VE.Can termination — both ends of the bus need 120Ω terminators. Easy to forget, causes maddening gremlins.
- Battery compatibility — if you're running a third-party bank (EcoWorthy, Fogstar, or similar), check whether it supports a recognised BMS communication protocol. Without proper DVCC integration, the Cerbo won't receive accurate state-of-charge data, which rather defeats the purpose.
- GX Touch — not strictly necessary, but on a boat where you want a quick glance at your system, it's worth considering.
The VRM portal has been genuinely useful for me, especially monitoring overnight discharge patterns when I'm EV charging from the bank — something I know others on here are experimenting with.
