Right, this one's been rattling around in my head since I saw a similar thread pop up elsewhere, and I reckon it's worth chewing over here with people who actually know their kit.

So — three-phase Victron Multi RS setups. What happens when you yank one unit out for an RMA or fault diagnosis? In theory, Continue With Missing Phase should mean the remaining two units crack on and keep the lights on. In practice... does it actually behave that reliably?

I'm single-phase myself (modest little cabin setup, nothing glamorous), so I've never had to wrestle with this personally. But I know a few of you lot are running proper three-phase systems for workshops or off-grid smallholdings, and I'd genuinely like to understand whether this feature is as robust as Victron's documentation suggests — or whether it's one of those settings that looks brilliant on paper and then sulks in real life.

Specifically:

  • Does removing a unit mid-installation (before PV is ever connected) cause any unexpected grief?
  • Is there a recommended sequence for taking a phase offline safely?
  • Anyone had firmware quirks cause the remaining units to throw a wobble?

The scenario that prompted this is interesting because the unit flagged a safety relay fault without PV being involved at all — which suggests the commissioning process itself might be more fragile than it ought to be.

Feels like a gap between what the feature promises and what actually happens on site. Curious whether others have bumped into this or whether I'm just catastrophising from the sidelines.

Pile in if you've got experience here — especially if you've successfully (or unsuccessfully) pulled a phase from a live system.

If it's about inverter-chargers that claim "continue with missing phase" as a feature, I'd agree there's a real question about whether that's genuinely useful or just a workaround masking a deeper installation problem. On a properly balanced three-phase setup, losing a phase shouldn't be something you routinely plan for — it's a fault condition, full stop.

Curious whether you're coming at this from a domestic grid-tie angle or more off-grid/hybrid? Changes the conversation quite a bit in my view.

Assuming @CamperSam is heading where I think they are: Continue on Missing Phase on Victron Multi/Quattro units is genuinely misunderstood. Most people treat it as a failsafe convenience feature, but the actual behaviour — particularly how the unit recalculates its power budget and potentially overloads remaining phases during asymmetric loads — matters enormously depending on your application.

In a van context it's largely irrelevant since we're single-phase throughout, but I've been helping a mate with a static off-grid barn setup running a Quattro 10kVA in a three-phase cluster, and the interaction between PowerAssist and a missing phase event caused some genuinely unexpected breaker behaviour.

The ESS documentation covers it, but you have to read between the lines. Victron's own Cerbo logs told the real story in our case.

Assuming @CamperSam is asking about Victron's Continue with Missing Phase setting on three-phase Multi/Quattro systems — yeah, it's genuinely misunderstood.

The name implies it's a failsafe but it's really a last resort toggle. If one phase drops, the inverters on the remaining two phases will try to carry the load. Sounds handy until your loads aren't balanced — then you're asking two units to cover what three were sharing, and you risk overcurrent tripping on the healthy phases.

For most off-grid setups it makes more sense to let it shut down cleanly and sort the fault, rather than limp along asymmetrically and potentially damage kit.

Not directly relevant to my garden office (single phase, Multiplus-II) but I've seen this bite people on three-phase boat installations. Worth checking your ESS or VEConfigure assistant settings are aligned with whatever you decide.

@CE_Builds beat me to the setup explanation so I'll just add — from a backup/cabin angle, Continue with Missing Phase is genuinely useful if you've got asymmetric loads and can't afford everything dropping out just because one phase wobbles. Seen it save a setup during a grid fault that only clipped L2.

That said, it's not a "set and forget" — worth keeping an eye on neutral current if your loads aren't reasonably balanced. Victron's own docs are a bit vague on the limits there.

Anyone actually stress-tested it with Multiplus-II units under real unbalanced load? Curious what margins people are working with.
