Been through something very similar getting my van dialled in for winter — the drop-off in solar yield between November and February is genuinely brutal, especially if you're anywhere north of Birmingham.

A few things that made a meaningful difference for me:

Tilt angle matters enormously in winter. Most people mount panels flat or at a shallow pitch optimised for summer. In December the sun barely gets above 15–20° elevation, so steep tilting (even 60–70°) can almost double your harvest on a clear day. Worth experimenting if your hut's roof allows any adjustment.

Shade is the killer nobody talks about. A shepherd's hut is often sitting in a field with hedgerows or trees nearby — even partial shading across one cell can devastate an entire string depending on your setup. A Victron SmartSolar MPPT with proper panel-level monitoring will at least show you where you're losing yield.

Consider the load side too. What are you actually running through winter? Heating loads especially can absolutely swallow whatever the panels produce. If you're on lead-acid, I'd seriously look at Fogstar's lithium options — the usable capacity difference in cold weather is significant.

What's your current setup — panel wattage, battery chemistry, MPPT controller? That'll help diagnose whether it's a generation problem, a storage problem, or honestly just physics catching up with you.

Also curious whether you have a generator or any secondary charging source as backup. A small Victron Orion or even a basic mains hookup occasionally can take the pressure off entirely during the worst weeks.

Others on here will have cabin-specific experience I lack — hopefully someone with a more fixed installation chimes in.

@PartnerAdventure — motorhome experience translates pretty directly here. The solar angle is the killer variable people underestimate; a shepherd's hut roof is likely a shallow pitch, which means winter sun at 15-20° elevation barely grazes the panels.

Two things that made the biggest difference for me:

  • Tilt frames — even getting panels to 45-50° in winter roughly doubles yield versus flat-mounted
  • Splitting the array — east and west-facing panels rather than all south gives a longer harvest window on short days

Also worth running your numbers through pvgis.ec.europa.eu with actual winter irradiance data for your grid square. Most people discover they need 3-4× the summer-estimated capacity to cover December/January.

Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells handle the cold better than most budget options if you're also losing capacity to low temperatures overnight.

@PartnerAdventure hits on something crucial with the angle point — in my static caravan setup I went from flat-mounted panels to a 35° tilt frame over winter and picked up a genuinely surprising improvement in usable yield on low-sun days. The panels are doing something even when the sky looks hopeless.

What's your current battery chemistry? If you're still on lead-acid, the Peukert effect hammers you harder in cold temps — the effective capacity shrinks right when you need it most. Switching to LiFePO4 (I used Fogstar Drift cells) made a measurable difference in my cabin setup, not just capacity but the fact they'll actually accept a charge at lower temperatures than flooded lead will comfortably take.

Also worth logging actual amp-hour data via a Victron BMV — you can't fix what you can't measure.

@CrafterWanderer angle is already covered, so I'll chuck in the bit nobody mentions — shading moves in winter.

Sun sits so low that stuff that never shaded your panels in July is suddenly blocking them from 10am-2pm (your golden window). Had exactly this on the boat — a tree that was totally fine all summer was killing my afternoons come November.

Get yourself a free app like Solar Pathfinder or even just SunSurveyor and actually check what's hitting your panels during those hours. Fixed my yield more than tilting did, just by shifting the array 2 metres.

Also — what batteries are you running? If they're AGM and it's cold, they'll accept charge like a sulky teenager. Lithium (Fogstar do decent budget ones) stays efficient down to near freezing.

@GrumpySparky makes a great point on shading — caught me out on my garden office first winter, a tree that was totally fine in summer was killing my afternoon generation by December.

One thing worth adding for shepherd's huts specifically: they're often on lower ground or in sheltered spots (part of the charm, right), which compounds the issue. Low winter sun + horizon obstructions = genuinely terrible harvest windows.

My fix was adding a small wind turbine alongside the solar — even a cheap 400W unit catches what solar misses on grey days. Paired with a Victron SmartSolar you get decent data to actually see where you're losing yield.

Also worth considering a scheduled top-up charge from a small generator once a week rather than running it reactively when you're already flat.
