Converted an old shepherd's hut last summer — finally getting round to sorting the electrics

Been down this exact rabbit hole with mine — took about three weekends longer than I expected, but the end result was absolutely worth it.

The thing that caught me out was underestimating the cable runs. Old shepherd's huts have that curved corrugated iron roof, and routing cables neatly without them looking like an afterthought takes proper planning. I ended up sketching the whole layout on paper before touching a single crimp.

For the power side, I went with a Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller paired with a couple of Fogstar Drift 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries. Compact, reliable, and the Bluetooth monitoring means I can check state of charge from the sofa inside without moving an inch.

A few things I'd recommend thinking through early:

  • Decide on 12V or 230V — mixing both adds complexity fast
  • Plan your load list before sizing your battery bank — lighting, USB charging, a small inverter, and maybe a 12V compressor fridge all add up quickly
  • Cable sizing matters more than people think — voltage drop over longer runs in a metal-walled space is real

What's your current thinking on solar panel placement? The curved roof makes mounting panels directly on the hut tricky. Most people I've spoken to end up on a ground mount nearby, which actually gives you more flexibility to angle them properly anyway.

@QuietMaker cable runs are the silent killer of shepherd's hut builds — everyone obsesses over the panels and battery, then realises halfway through that their 4mm² twin-core won't cut it over a 6-metre run to the leisure battery.

Did mine in a 1970s Eccles caravan conversion a couple of years back. Mapped every circuit on paper first, calculated voltage drop properly using the Victron toolkit, then went one cable size up from what I thought I needed. Saved myself a proper headache.

The other thing nobody talks about in these builds is where you exit the roof for your cable entry glands — once the lining boards are up, you're committed. Learnt that one the hard way with a jigsaw and a lot of muttering.

What size system are you planning? Single panel or multiple?

@QuietMaker the cable run issue hit me hard on my van conversion too — you think you've planned every metre then suddenly you're routing around a wheel arch and adding another 4 metres you hadn't accounted for.

What really changed things for me was doing the full voltage drop calculation before buying cable, not after. On longer runs I ended up going one gauge heavier than I initially thought necessary — felt like overkill at the time but the difference in efficiency was measurable once everything was live.

For the shepherd's hut specifically, are you planning to bury any external runs between the hut and your panels? That's where I'd spend on proper armoured cable rather than cutting corners — Victron's MPPT controllers are brilliant but they can't compensate for resistance losses upstream.

@QuietMaker what size system are you actually running in there? That's the bit that matters before anyone can give useful advice on cable sizing.

Done a few of these now and the shepherd's hut shape catches people out — you're routing around curved walls and under floor boards when a straight run looks possible on paper. Suddenly your 4mm² cable that looked fine on the spec sheet is doing twice the distance.

Worth getting a proper voltage drop calculator open before you buy anything. Victron's MPPT sizing tool is decent but won't do your DC cable runs for you.

Also — is this a permanent site or does it move? Makes a difference to how rigidly you can fix conduit.

@ExBrickie good shout on the specifics — mine is roughly 400W of panels feeding a 200Ah LiFePO4 (Fogstar Drift), going through a Victron SmartSolar 100/30. What I'm not clear on is whether my cable sizing between the battery and the Victron MultiPlus is holding me back. Runs about 1.8 metres but I went with 16mm² which felt adequate at the time.

@QuietMaker did you find your inverter/charger positioning made a meaningful difference? I've got mine tucked in a rear cupboard and I'm wondering if heat buildup is causing it to throttle.
