Diesel generator passthrough and charging issues with Multiplus ii

Been running a similar setup in my garden office for about 18 months now — Victron Multiplus-II 48/3000 paired with a diesel generator for top-up charging during winter when the solar harvest drops off significantly.

My generator is a different unit (a Hyundai DHY6000SE rather than the 8000 series), but I've hit what sounds like a very familiar wall. The Multiplus is incredibly fussy about incoming frequency and waveform quality. Even when the generator display reads 50Hz, the Multiplus will occasionally reject the AC input entirely and switch to inverter mode, running down the Fogstar Drift 48V battery bank rather than charging it.

A few things I've found worth investigating if you're having similar grief:

  • PowerAssist and Dynamic Current Limiter settings in VEConfigure — the DCL setting especially makes a big difference with generators that have slightly wobbly frequency under load
  • The Multiplus's AC input current limit — set this conservatively, maybe 10-12A initially, and let the generator stabilise before increasing
  • Actual frequency logging — the onboard display on most budget generators is notoriously optimistic. A proper clamp meter with frequency readout told me my unit was wandering between 48.5 and 52Hz under varying load

Has anyone managed to tune the Multiplus acceptance window for generator input specifically? I know there are UPS mode adjustments but I'm wary of pushing those parameters without knowing the knock-on effects for my Cerbo GX monitoring.

What generator are others pairing successfully with Victron kit in a similar off-grid setup?

@KeithMurray solid setup for a garden office — the Multiplus-II handles generator passthrough brilliantly once you've got the input current limit dialled in correctly via VE.Configure.

One thing worth checking: make sure your AC input current limit is set conservatively relative to your generator's actual rated output. Diesel gensets often struggle at peak load, and the Multiplus will happily try to draw more than a cheaper unit can sustain cleanly.

I run mine with PowerAssist enabled — means the inverter supplements the generator during heavy loads rather than relying solely on it. Transformed winter reliability for me.

Also, what's your battery chemistry? If you're on LiFePO4 (Fogstar Drift cells here), the absorption/float parameters need configuring properly or your charge cycles will be inefficient regardless of generator runtime.

What symptoms are you actually seeing — is it tripping, undercharging, or something else?

@KeithMurray one thing worth checking — make sure your generator's frequency stability is decent. The Multiplus-II is quite picky about that. Had mine reject a cheap inverter-generator repeatedly until I adjusted the AC input frequency tolerance in VEConfigure.

Also set your AC input current limit conservatively. If the genny struggles under load the Multiplus will compensate by drawing from the batteries rather than tripping everything out — that's the PowerAssist feature doing its job.

What size generator are you running? For a 48V/3000 setup anything under 3kVA can get a bit marginal once charging amps ramp up alongside any passthrough loads.

@CaddyProject seconded on the frequency point — had similar grief on my narrowboat when I first hooked up a cheap inverter-generator. The Multiplus-II rejected it constantly until I realised the Hz was wandering all over the place under load.

One thing I'd add that hasn't been mentioned: check your input current limit settings in VEConfigure or the VictronConnect app. If it's set too low, the Multiplus will throttle the charger to protect the generator, which can make it look like a passthrough issue when it's actually just current limiting doing its job. Took me an embarrassingly long time to work that out.

For a garden office on 48V you'll also want to make sure your absorption/float voltages are dialled in properly — generator charging sessions tend to be shorter so you want to make the most of them.

@CaddyProject and @RobBennett93 have covered the frequency angle well, so I'll add something slightly different — check your AC input current limit setting in VE.Configure. On my shepherd's hut setup I had the Multiplus-II throttling charge current aggressively because the input limit was set too conservatively (8A default if I recall correctly). Generator was perfectly stable but the unit was protecting itself from overloading a "weak" source.

Bump that setting to match your genny's actual rated output — just don't exceed it obviously. Also worth enabling the Dynamic Current Limiter in VE.Configure if your generator takes a few seconds to stabilise under load; stops the Multiplus from pulling too hard during that ramp-up phase and causing the genny to bog down or cut out entirely.

Both settings are easy to miss if you've just done a default install.

Really useful thread this — following closely as I've got a similar winter charging dilemma with my motorhome setup.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: have you checked your AC input current limit settings in VictronConnect? On the Multiplus-II you can throttle how much current it pulls from the genny, which really helps if your generator is undersized or struggling under load. I had mine set too aggressively at first and kept getting nuisance trips.

Also worth looking at the transfer switch settings — specifically the UPS function and AC input voltage window. Tighten those tolerances too much and it'll reject the generator's output even when frequency is fine.

@ExPostie82 I'm curious what you were about to add — don't leave us hanging! 😄

What generator are you actually running @KeithMurray? That might help diagnose things further.
