Got caught out by this one on my motorhome build last year. There's a small grounding screw on the casing of my Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and I wasn't sure whether it actually needed connecting to chassis or whether it was just there as an option.

After a bit of digging, my understanding is:

  • It's a protective earth point for the controller's metal casing
  • In a floating/isolated system (common in motorhomes and boats) you often don't need to connect it
  • But if you're running a negative-grounded system where your battery negative ties to chassis, it makes sense to ground it too for safety

I ended up connecting mine to chassis just to keep everything consistent with the rest of my build. No issues since.

That said, I've seen a few threads where people say leaving it unconnected caused no problems at all. Victron's own documentation is a bit vague on this one IMO.

Anyone else had to think this through? Particularly curious whether the answer changes if you're running lithium — I switched to a Fogstar Drift 100Ah last season and I know grounding practices can differ slightly with LiFePO4 setups compared to lead-acid.

Worth getting clear on before the build is finalised rather than retrofitting later 🔧

@SuffolkSolar Yes, worth doing properly! That screw is for chassis/earth bonding, and on a motorhome it's actually particularly important. Connect it to your vehicle chassis earth with a decent gauge wire — I used 4mm² on mine.

The main reason is fault protection. If there's ever an internal fault causing the casing to become live, that earth connection ensures the breaker or fuse will actually trip rather than leaving you with a dangerous floating voltage on the metal casing.

Some people skip it on static off-grid setups and get away with it, but in a vehicle where you're touching metal regularly I wouldn't take the chance. Victron's own installation guide recommends it too, so worth following their advice on that one.

Jumping in here because I made a mistake with exactly this on my shepherd's hut build before I got it right on the boat!

On the boat it's non-negotiable for me — I've got that grounding screw connected to the vessel's common negative busbar. Partly for safety but also because I noticed my Victron SmartSolar was giving slightly erratic Bluetooth readings before I sorted the earthing properly. Don't know if that was coincidence but it settled right down afterwards.

Quick question for the thread though — does anyone know if the requirements differ between a static installation (like a shepherd's hut on timber frame) and a metal-hulled boat? I'd assume a timber structure changes things considerably since there's no conductive chassis to reference against. How did you handle that @SuffolkSolar on the motorhome — did you run it back to the vehicle chassis directly?

To add to what @DebbiePowell76 is getting at — on a motorhome specifically, that chassis ground connection becomes particularly important because you've got a moving vehicle environment with vibration and potential for static buildup. Victron do actually recommend connecting it in their installation manual, though in a 12V negative-earthed system it often ends up bonded to your negative busbar anyway depending on your wiring setup.

Worth checking your specific system topology before assuming it's redundant. If you're running a floating negative (common in some marine and off-grid setups) the answer changes slightly. What's your negative earthing arrangement on the motorhome, @SuffolkSolar? That'll determine exactly how it should be handled in your case.

Relevant question for my cabin build too, so watching this thread closely. @CamperTel @DebbiePowell76 — does it matter what gauge wire you run to that grounding screw? I used 6mm² on my van conversion for the main negative bus but wasn't sure if the chassis bond on the controller casing needs to match that or whether something lighter like 4mm² or even 2.5mm² is acceptable. Also, is there a meaningful difference between bonding to a dedicated earth bar versus running directly to the chassis/negative terminal? My cabin is timber-framed so there's no metalwork to bond to naturally, which complicates things slightly.

Short answer: yes, connect it — that screw is your chassis/earth bond point and on a Victron SmartSolar it's not just decorative 😄

On my van conversion I initially left it floating and got phantom BMS alerts that drove me absolutely mad. Bonding the case to the negative busbar (or chassis on a vehicle) sorted it immediately. For a static setup like @OddJobBob22's cabin, run it to your earth rod connection. The Victron manual is actually decent on this — page 6 or so covers it properly.

Key thing people miss: it's separate from your negative DC wiring. The chassis screw is specifically for equipotential bonding — keeps the controller casing at earth potential if there's ever an internal fault, which is your protection against a nasty shock.

Don't skip it. Proper earthing isn't optional, it's just boring until it saves your life.
