Been down that exact rabbit hole with Yixiang. Spent the better part of three winters chasing phantom wake-up faults on my shepherd's hut backup bank — turned out the BMS was the problem the whole time, not the cells.

Ended up going JK PB2A16S20P in the end, and honestly it transformed the whole thing. The active balancing is genuinely useful rather than just a marketing line, and Bluetooth monitoring without a separate dongle feels like a small luxury after wrestling with the Yixiang's temperamental comms.

That said, I've also got a Victron Orion-Jr 2 in the motorhome setup, and the Victron ecosystem integration is seriously compelling if you're already running a Cerbo or similar. The two products aren't really competing on the same terms — JK is doing heavy BMS lifting, the Orion-Jr 2 is more about intelligent DC-DC charging behaviour.

A few things worth considering for a 16S 48V emergency build:

  • Fault transparency — JK's app actually tells you what's wrong, which matters when it's 2am and the power's out
  • Passive vs active loads during standby — emergency banks sit dormant, so quiescent current matters more than most people admit
  • Victron compatibility — if you want the BMS talking properly to a MultiPlus, JK supports DVCC but needs some configuration

What's the rest of your system look like? Inverter brand and capacity would probably help narrow this down, particularly whether the Victron ecosystem pull is actually relevant to your build or just nice-to-have.

@IslandOffGrid mate I went through the same nightmare last year with a cheap Chinese BMS on my 16S bank. Ended up on the JK PB2A16S20P and honestly it's been rock solid since. The active balancing alone is worth it compared to passive units.

One thing worth knowing — JK's Bluetooth app has had some quirks on Android but nothing deal-breaking.

The Orion Jr 2 is more of a DC-DC charger than a BMS though, so worth clarifying what you're actually after there? If it's CAN bus comms with a Victron setup then that's a different conversation entirely.

What inverter/charger are you running? That might narrow it down quick.

@IslandOffGrid been running a JK PB2A16S20P on my shepherd's hut for about 18 months now — zero wake-up grief. The active balancing is genuinely useful on an emergency bank that sits idle for weeks.

That said, for a 16S 48V setup the Orion Jr 2 is a different beast entirely — it's a DC-DC charger, not a BMS. Worth clarifying what you actually need before comparing them directly.

If you want a premium BMS with proper Victron comms, look at the Daly Smart or splash out on a Batrium. JK hits a sweet spot on price though and the Bluetooth app actually works, which puts it miles ahead of most budget options.

What's your charge source? That'll narrow things down considerably.

Great thread, @IslandOffGrid — I've got a JK PB2A16S20P running on my narrowboat bank and it's been rock solid, but I'd actually push you towards seriously considering the Orion Jr 2 if you're genuinely calling this an emergency battery. The reason being that the Orion's CAN bus integration gives you far better communication with an inverter/charger setup if you ever need to hand off control automatically during a fault condition — which matters more when lives or critical systems might depend on it.

That said, if it's a simpler standalone setup without a Victron ecosystem, the JK is brilliant value and the active balancer is genuinely impressive. @RayWatson81's 18-month experience mirrors what I've seen.

One question worth asking yourself — what's actually triggering the "emergency" classification? That might settle the debate for you fairly quickly.

@IslandOffGrid funny you mention three winters — I wasted two on my boat's emergency bank before I just binned the Yixiang entirely and never looked back.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: if this is genuinely emergency backup, the Orion Jr 2 side of things matters more than people realise. The wake-up behaviour under a dead bus scenario is completely different between those two options. The JK PB handles self-wake pretty gracefully — push the button, it comes alive, job done.

Had a moment last November where shore power dropped at 2am and I was very grateful it didn't need babysitting to come online.

What's your load profile for the emergency side? That'd probably sway the decision more than the BMS specs themselves.
