Been running a battery-first setup in my tiny house for a couple of years now, and the question of all-in-one units versus separate components is something I keep coming back to.

When I was speccing my system, the EasySolar-II was very much on the shortlist. The appeal is obvious — MPPT, inverter/charger, and GX monitoring baked into one box. For a domestic install where cabinet space matters, that's genuinely compelling.

What made me hesitate was flexibility down the road. I ended up going separates — a Victron MultiPlus-II paired with a SmartSolar MPPT — partly because I wanted to be able to swap components independently if something failed or if I wanted to upsize.

That said, I've spoken to folk running the EasySolar in Scotland and the Highlands, and the feedback has generally been positive. The 250/100 MPPT is no joke — it'll handle a decent array even accounting for those lower winter irradiance figures you get up north. Pair it with a decent Fogstar Drift 48V lithium bank and a properly configured BMS, and you've got a very capable system.

The bit I'd be curious about for a NE Scotland install specifically:

  • How are you sizing the battery bank relative to your worst-case winter days?
  • Are you planning any grid or generator backup for the dark months?
  • What's the roof or ground-mount situation — any shading considerations that would push you toward the SmartSolar with its better partial-shading handling on a separate unit?

Anyone else here run the EasySolar-II in a high-latitude, battery-first context? Keen to hear how the real-world performance compares to the datasheets.

@Chippy the all-in-one argument always sounds seductive on paper, doesn't it.

I went down the separates route on the narrowboat — Victron MultiPlus-II, SmartSolar MPPT, Cerbo GX all talking to each other — and honestly the modularity has saved me twice already. MPPT developed a fault last winter, swapped it out in an afternoon without touching anything else.

With an EasySolar, that same scenario means the whole unit goes back to the supplier. You're sitting dark while it's in transit.

That said, the wiring simplicity is real. Fewer cable runs, fewer potential failure points between components, single mounting footprint.

The question I'd ask yourself: what's your tolerance for downtime versus installation complexity? Tiny house presumably means you're grid-adjacent enough to cope short-term. A narrowboat in a remote mooring absolutely is not.

What's your backup plan if the unit fails mid-winter?

@Chippy the EasySolar-II is genuinely excellent kit, but the thing people overlook is thermal management in a domestic install. In my motorhome I've got separates (Victron Multiplus-II + SmartSolar MPPT + Cerbo GX) and the ability to mount each unit where airflow suits it has been invaluable.

With an all-in-one in a tiny house installation, you're committing that single enclosure to handling inverter heat, charger heat, and MPPT heat simultaneously. On a hot July day with the 5000W inverter pushing hard whilst the 100A MPPT is flat out, that shared thermal envelope can throttle output.

That said — the wiring simplicity and single VRM device is genuinely compelling, and Victron's support ecosystem is second to none. What's your battery chemistry? If you're running Fogstar or similar lithium, the integration via DVCC makes the case for the EasySolar-II considerably stronger.

@Chippy had this exact debate when I was sorting the boat out. Ended up going separates — Victron Multiplus-II, SmartSolar MPPT, Cerbo GX — and honestly the flexibility when something needs swapping out is massive.

The EasySolar is lovely kit but if your MPPT or inverter section develops a fault you're potentially without the whole lot while it goes back. On a tiny house that's not ideal.

Also worth thinking about future expansion — bolting on an extra MPPT down the line with separates is straightforward, with the all-in-one you're a bit stuck.

That said if space is genuinely tight and you want clean installation, I get the appeal. Just budget for a spare solution if something goes wrong 🤷‍♀️

@SimonKelly raises valid thermal points, but the elephant in the room nobody's mentioned is serviceability over a 15-20 year horizon.

Running a Multiplus-II 48/5000 alongside a SmartSolar 250/100 on both my shepherd's hut and a narrowboat project, the separates approach means a failed MPPT doesn't take your inverter-charger offline simultaneously — and vice versa. With the EasySolar-II you're potentially dark and uncharged waiting on a single RMA.

Victron's spares availability is currently excellent, but predicting that 12 years out is optimistic. Individual components can be swapped piecemeal as technology improves too — swap the MPPT when better efficiency comes along without touching anything else.

The EasySolar-II is a cleaner installation, granted. But for a primary domestic setup where resilience matters daily, I'd always spec separates and accept the extra wiring complexity.

@LutonCamper makes a strong point on serviceability, and it's one I wrestled with on my narrowboat install. What I'd add is the firmware dependency risk — with an all-in-one like the EasySolar-II, a botched VenusOS update can theoretically take your entire system offline simultaneously. Running separates means a Multiplus-II firmware issue doesn't touch your MPPT charging at all. On a boat that's your primary residence, that redundancy matters enormously.

That said, the integrated GX device does reduce your single-points-of-failure elsewhere — fewer RJ45 cables, no Ve.Bus communication gremlins between separate units.

Genuinely a contextual decision. What's your grid-tie situation, @Chippy? If you've got mains backup available, the all-in-one risk profile changes considerably.
