Spotted this doing the rounds on a few Facebook groups too — seems like ECO-WORTHY have been pushing these hard lately. The price point is tempting, I'll grant them that, but I'd want to dig into the BMS specs before parting with any cash.

My concern with these budget Chinese cells is always the cycle life claims vs reality. They'll advertise 4000 cycles but that's typically at 0.2C discharge down to 80% DoD under ideal lab conditions. Real-world narrowboat or van use with variable loads, partial states of charge, and our lovely British ambient temperatures tells a very different story.

A few things worth checking:

  • Cell origin — are these genuinely Grade A EVE or CATL cells, or something else entirely?
  • BMS continuous current rating — 280Ah at even 0.5C is 140A, plenty of van setups will stress a cheap integrated BMS
  • Warranty and UK support — who actually handles a warranty claim if it goes wrong?

That said, at £265-ish equivalent, even if you get 2-3 good years on a boat aux bank it might pencil out. I ran Fogstar Drift cells on my previous boat before upgrading to proper Victron-compatible rack batteries and honestly the Fogstar experience spoiled me — knowing the UK support was actually there made a massive difference to peace of mind.

Has anyone actually pulled the trigger on these specific ECO-WORTHY units recently? Curious whether the cells inside match what's advertised on the label — that's always the lottery with this tier of product. Would love to see some real capacity test data rather than just the spec sheet numbers.

@ExSquaddie49 — you'd want to dig into the cycle life claims particularly. ECO-WORTHY tend to be a bit... optimistic with their specs. The headline 280Ah figure is often measured at a very low discharge rate (0.1C or so), so real-world usable capacity at anything resembling normal loads will be noticeably lower.

Also worth checking whether that price includes a proper BMS with cell balancing, or just a basic protection board. At £265-ish equivalent, the margins are razor thin, so something's usually been skimped on.

Not saying avoid entirely — plenty of folk here have had reasonable results from budget Chinese cells — but I'd want to see independent capacity test results before committing. Check the EVE or CATL datasheets for Grade A cells and compare what ECO-WORTHY are actually claiming against those benchmarks.

@ExSquaddie49 Had one in my shepherd's hut for eight months — spoiler: it's now a very expensive doorstop.

Key things to actually verify before parting with your cash:

  • Real capacity — slap a proper load tester on it, not their figures
  • BMS quality — ECO-WORTHY's built-in BMS is doing the bare minimum, balancing is questionable
  • Cell grade — Grade A claims don't always survive scrutiny
  • Warranty support — try actually contacting their UK support team for fun

For not much more, a Fogstar Drift gives you proper Grade A EVE cells with a BMS that won't embarrass itself under load. The "savings" on budget cells have a habit of evaporating spectacularly — usually at the worst possible moment, like mid-February in a field somewhere.

@MarineGeoff ouch, eight months is brutal 😬

Had a similar experience years back with a budget Chinese cell — looked great on paper, reality was very different. Now I only run Fogstar Drift or proper EVE/CATL cells and honestly the price difference is nothing compared to the hassle of a dud pack.

The thing with these ECO-WORTHY deals is the $ pricing too — if you're buying from a UK seller the import duties and potential warranty headaches make that "$265" figure pretty meaningless.

For 280Ah LiFePO4 I'd be looking at:

  • Fogstar (UK stock, decent support)
  • SRNE or Pylontech if budget is tight
  • DIY EVE cells from a reputable importer

Real cycle life data matters more than headline price. What BMS are they bunging in it anyway? That's often where these budget packs really cut corners.

@MarineGeoff eight months is painfully familiar territory — I had a budget cell go the same way on the boat, which is what pushed me toward Fogstar for the shepherd's hut build. Paid more upfront but two years in and the cells are still behaving themselves.

The thing with these ECO-WORTHY units that nobody mentions is what happens inside the BMS under sustained load. On a boat or hut you're not doing gentle occasional draws — you're hammering them through the night. That's where the spec-sheet optimism @AndyPalmer flagged really bites you.

For £265 equivalent it's not impossible value, but I'd want to see independent capacity tests at 0.5C before touching one.
