So I've been down this rabbit hole before — spent three weeks in 2022 convincing myself I needed a turnkey all-in-one solution for the shepherd's hut, nearly pulled the trigger on an Ecoflow before my mate pointed out I was essentially paying for a very expensive plastic shell around cells I could source myself.

That said, I won't be a complete snob about it. The Delta 3 is genuinely tidy kit for someone who wants zero faff. Plug it in, it works, done.

The WattCycle 5kWh rackmount is interesting me though — anyone actually got hands-on with their v2.5? I've seen the spec sheet and the BMS figures look reasonable, but spec sheets are basically fiction written by optimists.

My concern with this whole stack:

  • Ecoflow's proprietary ecosystem doesn't always play nicely with third-party batteries
  • 500W of panels into that Delta 3's input ceiling is cutting it close depending on your array config
  • Rackmount in what enclosure, exactly? A shepherd's hut has feelings about moisture ingress

I run a Victron setup myself — MultiPlus, Fogstar Drift cells, proper Cerbo monitoring — so I'm perhaps biased toward systems where you can actually see what's happening rather than trusting an app that requires a cloud server in Shenzhen to remain operational.

But I'm genuinely curious what others here think. Anyone running a hybrid like this — proprietary portable unit plus separate rackmount LiFePO4 — and actually getting clean power figures out of it?

Shepherd's hut is a cracking use case, similar energy profile to my narrowboat in some ways — modest but consistent loads.

The WattCycle 5kWh rackmount is interesting kit, curious which direction you went. The EcoFlow ecosystem can feel tempting for its plug-and-play appeal, but for a permanent installation you often get more flexibility going the Victron route with a proper 48V battery bank.

What are your actual load requirements? That'll shape whether 500W of panels is sufficient or whether you'll be hungry come winter. Happy to share what works on the boat if it helps.

@CopperWelder mate, I nearly made the exact same mistake with my shepherd's hut — EcoFlow's lovely until you want to actually expand it and realise you're trapped in their ecosystem like a fly in amber 🪰

For a hut specifically, the WattCycle 48V rackmount paired with a proper Victron MultiPlus is the grown-up option — yes, more faff upfront, but you can bolt on extra capacity without binning the whole system when you inevitably catch upgraditis.

500W of panels is honestly a decent starting point for a hut; I'd make sure you're running Fogstar Drift cells if you go DIY battery route — serious bang per £ vs anything branded.

The EcoFlow Delta 3 is brilliant for camping, not so brilliant when you want your hut to run a kettle and a heated blanket simultaneously in November. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@CopperWelder the WattCycle 48V rackmount is worth serious consideration if you're thinking long-term expandability — I've got a similar setup running emergency backup for my workshop and the BMS integration with a Victron MultiPlus-II is genuinely solid once configured properly.

One thing nobody mentions: that 500W panel array will hit your battery ceiling faster than you'd expect on clear July days, so factor in a decent MPPT controller with proper charge curves for LiFePO4 chemistry. The Victron SmartSolar 100/30 handles this well and gives you proper monitoring via VictronConnect.

The EcoFlow's proprietary ecosystem is the real killer — the moment you want to expand capacity or integrate with home automation, you're fighting the manufacturer rather than working with open protocols. With a rackmount LiFePO4 and a quality inverter-charger you're building something serviceable rather than disposable.

The thing that finally broke the deadlock was asking myself one question: do I want an appliance or a system?

EcoFlow is a brilliant appliance. When it works, it's seamless. When it doesn't, you're ringing a helpline.

A proper 48V setup with decent BMS integration means you're actually understanding what your power is doing — consumption, charge state, all of it visible on Victron's VRM portal from your phone.

With 500W of panels you've got decent headroom too. What's your typical daily load looking like? That'll tell you whether the WattCycle's 5kWh is genuinely sufficient or whether you'd be skating close to the margins on a grey February week.
