Decent price for what you're getting, but I'll be honest — after years of trusting my boat and shepherds hut setup to Victron SmartSolar controllers, it'd take more than a bargain to pry me away from the BlueTooth graphs I stare at whilst pretending to work.

That said, EG4 have clearly been putting in the effort lately and the specs on the HV series aren't embarrassing — anyone running a 48V system at higher string voltages will appreciate not having to derate everything into oblivion.

A few things I'd want to know before pulling the trigger though:

  • UK warranty support — who actually handles it when it goes wrong? Because "post it back to Tennessee" isn't my idea of a good time
  • Integration — does it play nicely with anything beyond its own ecosystem, or is it Cerbo GX hostile?
  • Efficiency curves at lower irradiance — because this is Britain, and "peak sun hours" is basically a rumour here

The $250 bundle pricing is clever marketing mind you — suddenly the base unit feels like it needs a friend.

Fogstar and the grey-import crowd have made us all more comfortable buying off the beaten path, so I get the appeal. Just wouldn't be retiring the Victron on the hut any time soon without seeing some real-world UK winter data from someone who's actually tortured one through a proper grey November.

Anyone here actually running EG4 kit in a UK climate? Genuinely curious whether the MPPT algorithm holds up when your panels are producing about enough to charge a Casio watch.

@BorderWanderer — can't argue with that loyalty, my narrowboat's been running a Victron SmartSolar 100/50 for four years without a single grumble, and the Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth the premium over mystery-brand alternatives.

That said, EG4 has a reasonable reputation Stateside, but UK after-sales support is essentially a postcard to Ohio — whereas Victron's dealer network here actually picks up the phone.

For anyone tempted purely by the price:

  • Fogstar often do solid deals on Victron-adjacent kit
  • Bimble Solar carry genuine stock with proper UK warranties
  • Resale value on Victron if you ever change your setup is genuinely strong

$250 sounds tasty until your controller fails mid-January on a static van in Wales with no recourse. Been there, done that, bought the Victron replacement.

Had a similar moment of temptation last spring when I was sorting out the static caravan setup — spotted a cheap Chinese MPPT and nearly went for it purely on price.

Glad I didn't. Ended up going Victron again and the VictronConnect app alone justifies the premium, honestly. Being able to see exactly what's happening from my phone while I'm pottering about elsewhere on the plot is worth every extra quid.

The EG4 kit might well be perfectly capable — I've heard decent things from American forums — but UK support and warranty claims are where these budget brands tend to fall apart. When something goes wrong mid-winter on a remote static, you want a phone number that actually works.

@BorderWanderer knows what they've got. Sometimes a bargain isn't really a bargain once you factor in the peace of mind column.

@DaleSpirit curious what you ended up going with for the static caravan — did you stick with a known brand or take the plunge on something cheaper?

I'm in a similar position right now, trying to decide on a controller for my static. I've been looking at Victron SmartSolar but the price difference compared to these lesser-known units is genuinely significant. Is the Victron integration with the app and the rest of the ecosystem actually worth that premium in practice, or is it more of a "nice to have"?

Also wondering whether EG4 even has much of a UK support network if something goes wrong — that's always my concern with buying American brands over here.

@BorderWanderer know exactly what you mean — I've got a Victron SmartSolar running my garden office and honestly the Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth the premium. Watching it from my phone while I'm inside making a brew? Priceless. 😄

EG4's big in the US market but I've not seen much UK support if something goes belly up. That's the bit that'd make me nervous — not the upfront saving, it's the "who do I ring at 9pm when it's doing something weird" problem.

For the EV charging side of my setup I really can't afford a dodgy controller causing issues upstream. One bad component and you're looking at a much more expensive headache than you saved.

Decent gear if you're in the States, but here? I'd be cautious. 🤷

@BorderWanderer completely understand the loyalty — I've got a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 on the motorhome and a 75/15 on the shepherds hut, and the data logging alone through VictronConnect justifies the premium for me. Being able to see exactly what's happening with yield, battery state, and absorption cycles means I can actually diagnose problems rather than guess.

That said, EG4 kit has improved considerably. The question I'd ask is: what's the warranty support like from a UK supplier? With Victron you've got proper distribution through the likes of Bimble Solar or Solar Bitz, so returns and firmware support aren't a headache. An imported unit at $250 might become expensive if something goes wrong six months in and you're dealing with transatlantic shipping.

What battery chemistry are you pairing it with? That'd change the risk calculation for me.
