Einrichtung einer Victron-Anlage nach Insovenz des Installateurs

Bit of a cautionary tale from my shepherd's hut build — always get the Victron config files before handing over the final payment, because installers have a nasty habit of vanishing into the ether the moment your bank transfer clears.

Had something similar when my original sparks did a runner mid-project (not insolvency, just spectacular incompetence followed by ghosting). Left me with a Multiplus II wired up but configured with settings that made absolutely no sense — grid assist thresholds all over the place and the MPPT talking to precisely nobody.

Ended up sorting it myself via VictronConnect and honestly it wasn't as scary as I expected. The Victron community hub and their documentation are genuinely excellent. If you've got a Venus GX or a Cerbo, you can access the Remote Console and poke around without needing a dealer-level dongle.

A few things worth checking if you're in this situation:

• VE.Configure (Windows, free) lets you pull and edit the full Multiplus config
• Check your ESS assistant is actually installed — mine wasn't, which explained a lot
• Fogstar/Pylontech battery comms settings are a common botch job

Has anyone else here had to essentially "inherit" a half-finished Victron system and figure it out themselves? Curious whether people found a local Victron-accredited installer willing to do a one-off commissioning visit, or just went full DIY rabbit hole like me.

The off-grid community really ought to have some kind of "rescue squad" for abandoned installs — there's clearly a gap in the market. 🐑⚡

@RiverSpirit mate, the Victron Connect app will let you pull the config straight off the MPPT or Multiplus via Bluetooth even without the installer — just pair it, hit the three dots, and export the .rvsc file yourself before they leg it with your deposit 🔧

@BoatPaddy is right on the Bluetooth pull, but worth noting that VE.Config is what you actually want for the Multiplus — the Connect app doesn't expose all the parameters, particularly the transfer switch thresholds and AC input limits which are critical for backup scenarios.

If the installer used a VE.Bus Smart Dongle, you can connect directly via VictronConnect and export a .rvms file. Otherwise you'll need a MK3-USB interface (about £40 from Bimble Solar) and the VE.Configure software on a Windows machine.

From my own emergency backup setup, I'd also strongly recommend documenting the ESS assistant configuration separately — that's the part that's genuinely painful to reconstruct if you lose it, because the assistant wizard asks about 15 questions and the defaults aren't necessarily what your installer chose.

Good point from @SolarJake on VE.Config — just to add, if the installer used VE.Bus System Configurator for a parallel or three-phase setup, you'll need that separately too. Different tool, catches people out.

Also worth knowing: Victron's UK distributor Bimble Solar and a few others offer "rescue" config sessions if you're completely stuck. Not free, but cheaper than a full reinstall.

One thing nobody's mentioned — document everything in VRM going forward. Free portal, keeps a log of all settings changes with timestamps. I wish I'd set that up from day one on my garden office build rather than scrambling around six months later wondering why my absorption voltage had drifted.

Lesson learned the hard way: treat config files like you treat your warranty paperwork.

Good additions all round. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — if the Multiplus has a VE.Bus dongle or is connected to a Cerbo GX, you can pull the full system config remotely via VRM portal even without physical access to the unit. Had exactly this situation on my static caravan build when I inherited a partially-commissioned Victron system from a previous owner. Logged into VRM, the entire setup history was sitting there under the installation's dashboard.

Worth checking whether the installer registered the system under their VRM account rather than yours — if so, contact Victron UK support directly. They're generally helpful about transferring site ownership once you can prove you're the end user. Keep your purchase receipts and installation address ready.
