Bit of a strange one this and wondering if anyone else has hit the same wall...

Running a Victron MPPT RS 450/200 alongside a modest battery bank with a CAN-connected BMS. I'd already gone into VictronConnect and disabled the BMS control option — figured that would be enough to get the MPPT RS playing nicely on its own — but I'm still getting Error #67 popping up intermittently.

From what I can tell, Error #67 is specifically about the charger not receiving a BMS signal it's still expecting, even after you've told it not to bother. Which seems a bit daft, doesn't it?

Few questions for the collective brain here:

  • Has anyone actually got an MPPT RS running cleanly without any BMS on VE.Can? Not just suppressed, but genuinely happy?
  • Is there a specific order you need to do things — disconnect the BMS from the network first, then disable the setting, then reboot everything?
  • Does the Ekrano GX need any changes on its end as well, or is it purely the MPPT RS config?

My setup is a static caravan system that I'm gradually expanding, and I'm planning to swap out the battery bank eventually for something without CAN comms (probably a Fogstar setup with a simpler BMS). In the meantime I just need this thing to stop throwing errors and actually charge.

Anyone been down this rabbit hole already? What am I missing?

Hey @OldSparky, classic one this! Error 67 is "BMS connection lost" but the sneaky bit is that even after you disable BMS control in VictronConnect, the RS 450/200 still expects to see a valid CAN network present if it previously detected one. It doesn't fully forget.

Try a full power cycle of the MPPT (isolate both PV and battery side completely for a couple of minutes), then reconnect. If the error persists, check your CAN bus termination resistors - missing or doubled-up termination is a common culprit that causes ghost BMS errors even when the feature's supposedly switched off.

Also worth checking which firmware you're on - there were some BMS handling quirks fixed around the 1.08/1.09 releases if I recall correctly. What version are you running?

@OldSparky had this exact scenario with my static caravan setup last summer. Worth checking whether the MPPT RS is still expecting a BMS heartbeat on the CAN bus even after disabling BMS control — it can retain that expectation in its network configuration.

In VictronConnect, dig into CAN-bus profile settings and confirm it's not still set to a BMS-capable profile (like VE.Can BMS). Switching to plain VE.Can profile requires a reboot to fully clear it.

Also worth asking:

  • Is the CAN termination resistor correctly placed?
  • Any other devices on the same VE.Can network that might still be advertising BMS presence?

The RS 450/200 is particularly fussy about this compared to older SmartSolar units in my experience. A factory reset of network settings via the display is sometimes the only clean way through.

@OldSparky the bit nobody mentions — after disabling BMS control in VictronConnect, you also need to clear the CAN port assignment in the device settings. The RS 450/200 keeps a ghost reference to the BMS even with control disabled.

Go into VictronConnect → MPPT RS → CAN-bus BMS → set to None. Then do a full power cycle (not just a reset), both PV and battery side down for 30 seconds minimum.

Had something similar on my setup when I was reconfiguring after swapping battery banks. Wasted a good afternoon on it before finding a buried note in the Victron community forums.

If Error 67 persists after that, check your VE.Can termination — a missing 120Ω terminator resistor can cause phantom BMS detection. The RS series is particularly fussy about it.

What @Wez1961 said about the CAN port is spot on, and I'd add one more thing nobody's flagged yet — check your VE.Can termination resistors.

Had almost identical behaviour on the boat last spring. Disabled BMS control, cleared the port, still throwing #67 intermittently. Turned out one of my termination plugs had worked loose on the CAN network. The MPPT RS was effectively seeing a "ghost" BMS presence because the bus impedance was all over the place.

Fit a proper 120Ω termination plug at both ends of the VE.Can chain, do a full power cycle (not just a soft reset), and give it 5 minutes before reconnecting VictronConnect. Mine cleared immediately after that.

Worth grabbing the VRM history too — if #67 is appearing in clusters rather than continuously, loose termination is almost certainly your culprit.
