Really interesting one this — has anyone else had issues with control panels going into a weird frozen state after a shore power blip?

I ask because something similar happened on my boat recently. We had a brief power interruption at the marina (classic UK weather situation — storm rolled in, shore power flickered), and afterwards my monitoring display was showing completely wrong readings. Not quite the same setup as the ESP PowerMan scenario I've been reading about, but it got me wondering how common this kind of fault is across different Victron-adjacent control systems.

A few questions I'm trying to work through:

  • Is this typically a firmware/communication fault that a soft reset can fix, or does the panel itself sometimes need replacing?
  • Has anyone found that a full system power-down (AC and DC side both isolated) clears it, rather than just a charger reset?
  • For those running multiple MultiPlus units in a split or three-phase arrangement, does a panel freeze like this affect all units simultaneously or can you still operate them independently?

I'm also curious whether there's a UK supplier who stocks ESP components or whether it's essentially a specialist import job if parts are needed. Victron's own VE.Bus System Configurator seems like it might offer a workaround for some control functions in the meantime — has anyone tried that route?

Would love to hear from anyone who's nursed older legacy control hardware back to life alongside modern Victron kit. There must be some experienced folks here who've dealt with marina power quality issues causing downstream headaches like this?

@BorderCamper yes, had something similar with my Victron Multiplus setup in the garden office. After a brief grid blip the control panel just hung — completely unresponsive.

Ended up being a communication timeout between the CCGX and the inverter. Fixed it by power cycling the entire system including the Cerbo, not just the inverter itself.

Worth checking:

  • Is it the display that's frozen or the inverter actually stuck in a fault state?
  • Any error codes logged in VRM if you're using Victron kit?

Mine now recovers automatically since I updated the firmware, but I had to manually enable the "auto-restart on grid fault" option in the settings — it's off by default which seems daft for backup scenarios.

What control panel are you running exactly? Makes a difference whether this is a comms issue or something deeper in the inverter logic.

@BorderCamper my Victron on the narrowboat does the same thing — I've started calling it the "frozen panic face" because the display just stares at you like it's seen a ghost 👻

Classic fix I found: hold the reset on the ESP PowerMan for about 8 seconds rather than a quick press — apparently a brief power blip leaves it in a halfway-between state that a short reset won't clear.

Also worth checking your input voltage threshold settings; if shore power dips below the cutoff even momentarily, some units latch into protection mode and refuse to recover gracefully until manually booted.

@DaiLewis69 the Multiplus issue is slightly different — that's usually the VE.Bus assistant getting confused — but the principle's the same: full power cycle rather than just reset.

Haven't experienced this myself with the ESP PowerMan specifically, but it rings a bell from a thread on here a while back. If I recall correctly, someone found the issue was related to the control panel losing comms with the main unit during the blip and then not re-establishing properly on recovery — almost like they're waiting for each other to go first.

Worth checking whether a full hard reset (isolate everything, wait 30 seconds, bring it back up in the right sequence) clears it, rather than just cycling the panel alone. Also curious — @BorderCamper, does the main inverter itself carry on working normally when the panel's frozen, or does the whole lot stop? That might help narrow down whether it's a comms issue or something deeper in the firmware. Might be worth dropping ESP support a line as well.

Not had a PowerMan specifically but this rings true for my static caravan setup. Quick question though — when it freezes, does the inverter itself keep running or does everything drop out? Because on mine (Victron) the panel locked up once but power kept flowing fine, which made me think it was just the comms/display side rather than the inverter logic itself.

Also wondering — is this happening immediately after the blip or with a delay? And what's the shore power source, proper mains or a generator? Generator voltage wobble could be doing something different to a clean grid dropout.

@XHF_Builds — worth digging out that old thread if you can remember any search terms, might save everyone some time.

Ha, "frozen panic face" 😂 @DevonNomad that's going in my vocabulary permanently.

Had almost exactly this on my static caravan last winter — shore power wobbled during a storm and the control panel just sat there looking gormless. Wouldn't respond to anything.

Fix that worked for me: full hard reset — not just the
