Been running a pair of these in my motorhome for about eight months now and honestly they've earned their keep.

The self-heating function was the whole reason I went with Vatrer over something like a Fogstar Drift — I park up in Scotland fairly regularly and waking up to a dead bank because temps dropped overnight was getting old fast. The plates kick in around 5°C and I've had zero issues charging down to about -8°C on a particularly grim January trip near Aviemore.

Capacity claims seem fairly honest too. I'm pulling around 420–430Ah usable consistently, which for a Chinese cell isn't something I'd have bet on before buying.

A few things worth flagging though:

  • Communication with their support team is slow. Took nearly two weeks to get a response about Victron compatibility settings
  • The Bluetooth app is basic at best. I've seen better on far cheaper batteries
  • Terminals are solid and the build quality feels robust, but the manual is genuinely terrible — translated poorly and missing key parameters

I paired mine with a Victron Multiplus and a SmartSolar MPPT and getting the charge profile dialled in took some trial and error. I'd recommend setting absorption to 14.2V and float to 13.5V if anyone's struggling.

Would I buy again? Probably yes, especially for anyone doing winter touring. But I'd want to see the app improved before recommending them unreservedly.

Anyone else running these alongside a Victron setup? Curious whether others have tweaked their charge parameters differently.

@Nessa68 interesting choice — the self-heating threshold on those Vatrer units is quoted at 0°C activation, which is worth verifying against your BMS readout rather than trusting the ambient temperature in your hab area.

On narrowboats this matters considerably more than motorhomes because you're often sat with batteries in an uninsulated bow locker where hull condensation keeps temperatures genuinely marginal even when the interior feels fine.

One thing I'd scrutinise with any Chinese-manufactured self-heating cell is the parasitic draw from the heating element when it's cycling overnight — I've seen figures anywhere from 1.5A to 4A depending on ambient delta, which on a 460Ah bank isn't catastrophic but compounds across a cold week.

Have you actually dataloggged the heating activation events? Victron Cerbo with a BMV-712 shunt will show you exactly when current spikes are occurring.

Really interested in this thread — been weighing up self-heating LiFePO4 options for a while now as I'm planning to add EV charging capability to my setup and winter overnight sessions are a concern.

@Nessa68 do you know if the self-heating draws significantly from the battery itself when it kicks in? I'm wondering whether there's a noticeable voltage dip that might confuse a Victron MPPT or a connected charger during the warm-up phase.

Also curious — has anyone compared the Vatrer self-heating against something like a Fogstar Drift in cold conditions? The Drift doesn't have self-heating built in, so presumably you'd need an external solution there.

@DefenderAdventure that 0°C activation threshold is useful to know — does that mean it won't pre-heat at say -2°C ambient before you try to charge, or does it react fast enough not to matter?

Great thread, @Nessa68 — eight months is a decent real-world test, particularly through what's been a fairly harsh winter.

One thing worth flagging for @Cleggy as you're doing your research: the self-heating does draw from the battery itself, so if you're already quite depleted and parked in genuinely cold conditions, there's a small but real question about whether you have enough reserve to trigger and sustain the heating cycle before charging kicks in. Worth factoring into your usable capacity calculations.

Has anyone monitored the actual current draw during the heating phase on these Vatrer units? I'd be curious whether it matches their published figures or runs a bit higher in practice. Makes a difference when you're sizing your system around worst-case overnight scenarios.

Been watching this thread with interest — I'm trying to solve a similar problem but for a garden office rather than a motorhome.

My concern is whether the self-heating draw is significant enough to matter on a smaller setup. If the batteries are sitting overnight at near-freezing and the heater is cycling, that's parasitic drain I haven't really budgeted for in my calculations.

@Nessa68 did you notice any measurable overnight drain attributable specifically to the heating function? I'm trying to work out whether self-heating LiFePO4 genuinely makes sense at my scale or whether I'd be better off just insulating the battery enclosure properly and sticking with something like Fogstar Drift cells in a well-lagged box.

Basically wondering if the premium for self-heating is justified when you're not mobile and can control the environment more easily.
