Been running a pair of these in my garden office setup for about eight months now and honestly they've held up better than I expected for the price point. Picked them up when Fogstar was out of stock on their 12V units and needed something quickly.

The integrated BMS has been solid — no unexpected disconnects even when I accidentally hammered them with a decent load from a 1500W inverter. Capacity seems genuine too; I've been monitoring through a Victron BMV-712 and they're consistently delivering close to rated capacity after all this time.

A few things worth noting though:

  • Low temperature cutoff kicks in around 0°C which caught me out during that cold snap in January. Worth insulating the battery compartment if you're in an unheated outbuilding
  • Bluetooth monitoring on the app is a bit clunky compared to what you'd get natively through the Victron ecosystem
  • Build quality feels reasonable — terminals are solid, casing is decent

My main gripe is the documentation is clearly translated and some of the charge parameter recommendations don't quite match what the BMS actually does in practice. Set your Victron absorption at 14.2V and float at 13.6V and you'll be fine regardless of what the manual says.

Curious whether anyone else has pushed these harder with EV charging loads or solar MPPT setups? I'm considering adding two more units and moving to a 24V configuration but want to know if others have had any BMS communication issues when paralleling them.

Would also be interested to hear from anyone who's had them longer than a year — longevity data on these mid-tier Chinese cells is always the real test.

@DodgyRoamer interesting timing — I was in almost exactly the same boat last spring when I was commissioning my shepherd's hut. Fogstar backordered, deadline looming, and there I was on Amazon at midnight making questionable decisions.

Ended up going a different direction (Fogstar Drift 100Ah once they restocked), but I did extensively research the Vatrer units during my panic-buying window.

One thing worth checking if you haven't already — the low-temperature cutoff behaviour. A few users reported the BMS getting a bit precious about charging below 5°C, which in a garden office through a British winter is less of an edge case and more of a Tuesday.

How's it playing with your charge controller? Any BMS communication or just dumb voltage-based charging?

Eight months without a catastrophic failure is basically a glowing endorsement for budget Chinese cells tbh.

That said, I'd be watching the BMS behaviour closely at low temps. Had a no-name pack in my cabin that looked fine all summer then started nuking itself come November — BMS was cutting out below 5°C and the charge controller had no idea, just kept hammering it.

What are you using to monitor them? If you haven't already, stick a Victron BMV or at minimum a Bluetooth shunt on there so you can actually see what the BMS is doing rather than flying blind. Fogstar's own batts have decent app integration but with these third-party units you're guessing otherwise.

Not saying they're rubbish — just don't trust "seems fine" with LiFePO4 until you've got a winter cycle on the data.

@DodgyRoamer nice to hear a positive update — I've been eyeing these up for my motorhome emergency backup build where I don't want to commit Fogstar Drift prices for something that might sit unused 90% of the time.

Couple of questions if you don't mind:

  • What BMS protection have you got upstream? Running them bare or with something like a Victron Smart BatteryProtect?
  • How are they handling partial state of charge over winter? That's where I've seen cheaper cells degrade fastest
  • Any idea which cells are inside — EVE, CATL or mystery brand?

@GrumpyBuilder fair point on the low bar 😄 but honestly for standby/backup use where cycle counts stay low, budget packs can make genuine sense rather than spending on premium cells that'll barely get exercised.

@DodgyRoamer worth being precise here — "held up well" covers a lot of ground. Are you actually cycle-counting and tracking capacity retention, or just "it still works"? Big difference.

Running a Fogstar Drift 100Ah on my boat and I log every charge cycle. That data is what tells you whether cells are degrading or not, not just whether the lights come on.

Also curious what BMS comms you're getting out of these — Vatrer's spec sheet is vague on whether there's proper Bluetooth monitoring or just a basic LED indicator. If you're not seeing actual cell-level data you're essentially flying blind regardless of brand.

@ExTrucker73 for a backup application the self-discharge rate matters more than people realise — worth checking that spec before committing.

@HollyBaker makes a fair point — a battery that looks fine and one that's retained 95% capacity after 200 cycles are very different animals, and most of us are just guessing without a proper logger on it.

Slapped a Victron BMV-712 on mine precisely so I'd stop lying to myself about how the cells were performing.
