[feature request] Rename AC current sensor in Venus GUI

Been running a Victron setup on my boat for a couple of years now, and this is something that's genuinely been niggling at me.

The AC current sensor labelling in Venus OS is, frankly, a bit of a mess when you've got more than one thing going on. Right now you're stuck with whatever default name it throws at you — fine if you've got a dead simple setup, but once you start adding complexity it falls apart pretty quickly.

On the boat I've got sensors monitoring different circuits — shore power inlet, a small generator feed, and a backup inverter output. Trying to tell them apart in the GUI is... not ideal. The ET112 and similar AC meters let you assign custom names, so why not the current sensors? Seems like an oversight rather than a deliberate decision.

For anyone running emergency backup systems (which I suspect is a fair few of us on here), being able to label things clearly isn't just a nice-to-have — it's actually important when you're trying to troubleshoot quickly or hand the system off to someone who doesn't know it intimately.

Has anyone found a workaround? I had a poke around in the Venus config files a while back but didn't get anywhere useful, and I'd rather not start hacking about with things I don't fully understand.

Victron's community forum has had similar requests floating around for a while — wondering if there's been any movement on it or if anyone here has raised it through official channels. Would be good to know whether this is something that's actually on their roadmap or just perpetually sitting in the backlog.

@CliffGazer know exactly what you mean — spent an embarrassing amount of time staring at my Venus dashboard trying to work out which sensor reading was which when I first wired up my van build.

The labelling feels like it was designed by someone who never had to troubleshoot at 11pm in a layby.

What I ended up doing was using the Node-RED flow on Venus to relabel things for my own sanity, but that's a proper faff and shouldn't be necessary for something this basic.

Victron's community forum (community.victronenergy.com) is genuinely where these feature requests get traction — the devs actually read it. Worth posting there directly rather than hoping it filters through. I've seen simpler QoL changes like this get picked up reasonably quickly when enough people upvote them.

Massive +1 on this from me. With an EV charger and separate static caravan feed both going through my setup, the generic sensor labels in Venus OS cause genuine confusion when I'm trying to figure out which load is pulling what. I've resorted to scribbling on a bit of masking tape stuck to the wall next to the GX display, which is hardly ideal.

Would be brilliant if it were just a simple text field in the device settings — similar to how you can rename MPPTs. Can't imagine it'd be a huge development lift for Victron. Worth raising directly on the Victron Community forum if it hasn't been already — they do actually pick up feature requests there occasionally.

Been on boats long enough to know that confusing labelling causes real mistakes. Had a near-miss on my narrowboat last winter because I couldn't immediately tell which sensor was which during a fault diagnosis. Not ideal at 11pm in the dark.

Raised something similar on the Victron Community forum a while back. The response was essentially "use the notes field" which, with respect, completely misses the point. The notes field isn't visible where it matters.

What's actually needed is editable display labels that propagate through to the VRM portal as well — not just locally on the GX device. Half the time I'm diagnosing remotely anyway.

@VivaroDream your use case with the EV charger is exactly where this bites hardest. Multiple AC inputs with generic labels is a liability, not just an inconvenience.

Submit it properly via the Victron GitHub if you haven't already.

Completely agree — and this isn't just a cosmetic gripe. When you're troubleshooting at midnight because something's tripped, staring at "AC Current Sensor 1 / AC Current Sensor 2" is genuinely useless. My little cabin setup has three separate circuits monitored and I've resorted to sticking actual paper labels on the physical sensors because the GUI gives me nothing to work with.

Victron are brilliant at so many things but their UI/UX team clearly doesn't have to live with their own software at 2am in January.

The functionality already exists for renaming things like tank sensors in Venus OS — can't imagine this would be a massive dev lift to extend to current sensors too.

@BodgeItAndScarper raises a real safety point there as well. This should probably be bumped up the priority list rather than sitting in the "nice to have" pile indefinitely.
