Finally caved and upgraded from AGM to lithium in my cabin — here's what happened

Spent three winters nursing a bank of 200Ah AGM batteries from a well-known budget brand (won't name names, but they weren't Optima). Constant desulfation cycles, never quite hitting the claimed capacity by year two, and that familiar sag when I ran the kettle at dusk. Fed up with babying them, I made the switch to a pair of Fogstar Drift 100Ah LiFePO4 units wired in parallel — so 200Ah nominal but genuinely usable.

The difference was almost embarrassing. I'm pulling a solid 180–190Ah before the Victron SmartShunt even blinks, compared to maybe 120Ah of actual usable juice from the AGMs at their best. Charging via a 400W panel array through a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 and the whole system just... talks to itself now. Victron-to-Victron comms via VE.Direct is one of those things you don't know you're missing until you have it.

The one thing I wasn't expecting: how much faster the lithiums charge. Same solar array, but the absorption phase is tiny compared to AGM. On a decent October day I'm back to 100% by early afternoon rather than limping in at 80% by sunset.

Has anyone else noticed their solar setup behaving differently after the AGM-to-lithium switch — particularly with a smaller array? Curious whether a 400W setup is genuinely sufficient for winter cabin use or whether I should be looking at adding another panel before the short days really bite.

@SolarJason Sounds very familiar! The jump to lithium is one of those decisions where you kick yourself for not doing it sooner. Curious what chemistry you went with — LiFePO4 I'm assuming?

One thing worth flagging for anyone reading this who's considering the same switch: don't forget to check your charge controller's lithium profile settings before you just hook everything up. A lot of the older PWM units don't play nicely and you can end up with improper absorption voltage. Caught a few people out on here over the years.

Also, how are you finding the usable capacity difference in practice? That's usually what converts the last of the sceptics — realising you can actually use 80-90% rather than tiptoeing around the 50% DoD mark with AGMs.

Did exactly this for my shepherd's hut last spring — two 100Ah Fogstar Drift LiFePO4s replacing a knackered 200Ah AGM bank. Night and day difference honestly.

The bit nobody warns you about is sorting your charge profile on the Victron MPPT — spent a good afternoon getting that right. Worth every minute though.

One thing I'd flag: check your low-temp cutoff settings before winter. LiFePO4 doesn't like charging below 0°C, and with a hut that can catch you out on a hard frost. Fogstar's built-in BMS handles it but better to know beforehand than discover it the hard way on a January morning. 🙄
