Finding the perfect set up as a beginner

Been there with the "all-in-one" route myself. Bought one of those bundled kits when I first set up on my static — can't even remember the brand now, some generic Chinese thing off eBay. Worked for about 18 months before the MPPT controller started behaving erratically and the whole thing became more trouble than it was worth.

The problem with those kits is they're designed to get you buying, not to get you set up properly. Everything's undersized, the components don't talk to each other well, and when one part fails you're often replacing the lot.

What actually worked for me was breaking it down into proper separate components:

  • Panels — Renogy are decent value for UK buyers, reasonable warranty support
  • Controller — went Victron SmartSolar, the Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth the price premium
  • Batteries — Fogstar Drift LiFePO4, solid build quality and genuinely good customer service

The Victron ecosystem in particular makes a massive difference once you start expanding. Everything integrates, you can monitor properly, and you're not guessing what's happening with your system at 2am in January when the panels have seen about 40 minutes of weak sun all week.

My honest advice to anyone upgrading from a starter kit: don't try to save money on the controller or inverter. That's where cheap setups fall apart, usually at the worst possible moment.

Curious what others found was the weakest link in their first setup — was it the battery, the controller, or something else entirely? And did anyone actually have a decent experience with an all-in-one that lasted? Genuinely want to know if I just got unlucky.

@FormerMechanic14 the generic kit route is a rite of passage for most of us tbh.

What I'd add for any beginner reading this — don't underestimate the controller. That bundled PWM rubbish will waste 20-30% of your panel's potential compared to a decent MPPT. Victron SmartSolar is the gold standard but pricey; Renogy Wanderer or EPever Tracer are solid mid-range options that'll actually communicate with monitoring apps properly.

On my narrowboat I've got a Victron 100/30 talking to a Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 via a proper BMS — the Bluetooth monitoring alone has saved me from a low-voltage disaster twice.

Battery chemistry matters enormously too. If your budget stretches at all, LiFePO4 over AGM — the usable capacity difference is night and day for liveaboard situations where you're cycling daily.

@ExSquaddie49 is right, though I'd frame it slightly differently — those generic kits aren't just a rite of passage, they're an education.

What nobody tells beginners is that the weak point is almost never the panels — it's invariably the controller. PWM controllers bundled in those kits are essentially voltage-choppers; fine for a garden shed, genuinely problematic once you're running anything meaningful. On my narrowboat I wasted two seasons with PWM before fitting a Victron SmartSolar MPPT, and the efficiency difference in low-light British conditions was immediately measurable — not theoretical.

If you're starting fresh, buy your components separately. Panels are largely commoditised now. Spend your real budget on a quality MPPT controller and proper battery monitoring. Fogstar do decent lithium cells at reasonable prices if budget is a constraint. The system architecture matters far more than any individual component.

@DefenderAdventure curious what you'd frame as the actual first decision a beginner should make before buying anything?

I ask because when I started planning my tiny house setup I got completely lost in the kit vs component rabbit hole and honestly wish someone had just told me to work out my daily consumption first — everything else kind of flows from that doesn't it?

Also does anyone have experience sizing a system that needs to handle occasional EV charging as well as standard loads? That's where my calculations keep falling apart. The Victron MPPT calculators are helpful but the EV demand just throws everything off.

@CarolThomas79 honestly? figure out your actual daily consumption first — before even looking at panels or controllers.

Most beginners skip straight to "I want 400W of solar" without knowing if they need 50Wh or 500Wh per day. Massive difference in what you actually need to buy.

I did this wrong initially — ended up oversized on panels, undersized on battery. Wasted money both ways.

Grab a basic energy monitor, run it for a week, then spec your system. Once you've got that number, working out panels, a decent MPPT (Victron SmartSolar is hard to beat), and battery capacity is much more straightforward.

Everything else — brand choices, lithium vs AGM, Fogstar vs whatever — comes after you know that baseline figure.
