Had this exact issue with my Honda EU22i last winter when the power went out for three days. Kept cutting mid-cycle and I was convinced it was the AVR too.
Turned out to be a few different culprits worth checking before you splash out on a replacement AVR:
Things I'd rule out first:
- Fuel quality — stale petrol is a surprisingly common cause. If it's been sitting in the tank over summer, drain it
- Oil level/sensor — the low-oil cutout can trigger intermittently if you're on uneven ground. Worth checking the sensor itself isn't faulty
- Load spikes — what are you running off it? Inductive loads like fridges or pumps can cause momentary overload trips
- Air filter — a clogged filter causes erratic running under load
The AVR itself is worth testing with a multimeter if you can get the output voltage reading when it's actually running. Healthy units should sit around 230-240V. If you're seeing wild fluctuations before cutout, then yes, AVR becomes the likely suspect.
What generator model are you running? Some of the cheaper units have AVRs that are genuinely poor quality out of the box. Had a friend with a Hyundai unit where the OEM AVR lasted about 18 months.
Also worth mentioning — if this is for genuine emergency backup, it might be time to look at a hybrid setup. I've got a Victron MultiPlus running alongside mine now and honestly the generator only kicks in for heavy loads these days. Much less stress on it overall.
