So this might be a rambling one, but bear with me.
When I was setting up the monitoring side of my garden office system last autumn, I went through a similar head-scratching episode with the GlobalLink 520. Spent the better part of a weekend convinced the thing was dead on arrival — no signal indicator, VRM showing the device as "never connected," the works.
Turns out it was connecting, just... silently. The LED behaviour on these units is deceptive. It'll sit there looking completely inert while happily pushing data upstream every hour or so. I only figured it out when I logged into VRM the following morning and spotted a full night's worth of telemetry sitting there perfectly.
A few things worth checking if you're in the same boat:
- SIM provisioning delay — the built-in SIM can take 24–48 hours to fully activate on first use, especially if it's latched onto a weaker signal (mine was bouncing between EE and O2 towers out here)
- Cerbo GX firmware — make sure it's current, older versions had known quirks with GlobalLink handshaking
- VRM portal "last seen" timestamp — this is your friend, ignore the LEDs entirely initially
The Victron documentation is honestly a bit thin on the LED state explanations for UK network behaviour specifically.
Anyone else found the GlobalLink more reliable than it appears to be? Or had genuine connection failures they eventually resolved? Curious whether location plays a big role — I'm semi-rural so signal isn't brilliant.
