Goodwe hybrid inverter off grid only install

Been running a Goodwe GW3648D-ES in my static caravan for about 18 months now and the off-grid-only setup was... an adventure, let me say that much.

The big gotcha with Goodwe hybrids used purely off-grid is the grid port configuration. Out of the box they want to see a grid reference to behave properly. Took me an embarrassing number of evenings with the settings menus before I found the "off-grid mode" buried in the advanced configuration — and even then the voltage and frequency tolerances needed tweaking or she'd fault out constantly.

What I eventually landed on:

• Off-Grid Mode enabled obviously
• AC output voltage set to 230V (check yours defaults to 240V, which caused me grief)
• Battery type set correctly — I'm running Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 and had to set custom BMS parameters via the SEMS portal rather than trusting the presets

The Goodwe SEMS app is genuinely decent for monitoring once it's all talking, though getting the WiFi dongle to connect was its own little saga.

One thing I'd warn anyone about — the Goodwe off-grid inverters aren't quite as battle-hardened for pure island mode as a Victron Multiplus. They're cheaper for a reason. Mine handles my caravan loads absolutely fine, but I wouldn't trust one running a shepherd's hut workshop with heavy inductive loads.

Anyone else found quirks with the frequency shifting for load control? I've been trying to get mine to communicate with a Renogy MPPT via that method and it's been hit and miss.

Curious what battery setups others have paired with these — particularly interested if anyone's got CAN bus comms working properly.

The Goodwe kept throwing W204 faults when battery voltage dipped below a certain threshold under load, which in a caravan with a kettle and a few other bits happening simultaneously was... frequent.

Worth checking:

• EMS mode settings in the SolarInfo Bank app
• Your battery comms — are you running a compatible BMS or relying on voltage only?
• Firmware version (some early builds had known off-grid instability)

What battery bank are you running with it? That often changes the troubleshooting picture completely.

After 18 months of cooking on a narrowboat with a similar setup, the other sneaky gotcha nobody mentions is that Goodwe hybrids often won't wake from sleep mode without a minimum load — chuck a small dummy load (even a 10W resistor or a cheap night light) on the AC output and suddenly everything plays nicely.

Also worth noting for any UK folk here: the GoodWe SEMS portal is essentially useless without a grid connection for monitoring, so pair it with a Victron Cerbo GX or grab a basic RS485 to USB adapter and pull data locally — saved my sanity more than once.

@LisaHunt88 is spot on about the backup mode workaround, but that dummy load trick is the real unsung hero of the off-grid Goodwe experience.

Scattered thought incoming: the one that really bit me on my motorhome Victron-to-Goodwe comparison was the battery comms protocol malarkey — Goodwe's BMS communication is proprietary enough that half the Fogstar Drift cells won't handshake properly without manually forcing the battery type in the settings, leaving you in a voltage-only mode that absolutely hammers your pack's longevity without you realising it.

Also worth knowing: the AC output frequency in off-grid mode can drift slightly outside the 49.8–50.2Hz window under heavy resistive loads, which trips some cheaper UK kettles and anything with a motor that's a bit fussy — learned that one the expensive way with a pump.

@CumbrianWanderer check your event logs for OV_Grid false faults too — classic Goodwe ghost alarm when there's literally no grid present.

@FormerCop that battery compatibility point is really interesting — did you find the Goodwe played nicely with lithium once you'd sorted the BMS communication, or were you still getting random disconnects?

On my narrowboat I'm currently weighing up whether to go Goodwe or stick with Victron (MultiPlus, hence the username). The thing that keeps pulling me back to Victron is the ecosystem — the Cerbo GX, VRM portal, all of it just talking to each other properly.

With Goodwe, does the SEMS portal actually give you decent real-time monitoring when you're off-grid only, or does it need a grid connection to phone home properly? That's something I genuinely can't find a straight answer on anywhere.
