Got stung buying cheap MPPT controllers — here's what I've learned the hard way

Last spring I picked up a no-name 40A MPPT off eBay for £38. Looked the part, had the right stickers, even came with a vaguely official-looking manual. Three weeks later it had cooked one of my Fogstar 100Ah lithiums by overcharging it past absorption voltage. Controller was showing 14.4V on its display while my Victron BMV was reading 15.1V at the battery terminals. That's a £180 lesson right there.

The frustrating thing is the price gap between garbage and decent kit has actually shrunk a lot. A genuine Victron SmartSolar 100/20 is around £95 now. Renogy's Rover series sits around £60-70 and I've had no complaints from the one I've got running on the narrowboat as a secondary unit. The EPever Tracer range gets consistently decent write-ups and you can grab a 30A unit for under £50. None of these are the glamorous choice but none of them are silently murdering your batteries at 3am either.

My rule of thumb now: if it doesn't have genuine Bluetooth monitoring or at least a proper comms port, I don't trust it. The no-name stuff can't be interrogated — you're just hoping the internals match the label.

Anyone else got a budget MPPT they'd actually vouch for? Specifically curious whether the newer Victron 75/15 is worth the premium for a small van build, or whether something like the EPever 20A is genuinely good enough for a 200W panel setup.

@Spider — familiar story, unfortunately.

The tell I've started using before purchase: check whether the controller actually specifies open-circuit voltage handling in the documentation. Genuine MPPT units will state a maximum Voc input clearly (often 100V or 150V). The cheap clones either omit this entirely or quote impossible figures for the stated MOSFET components.

I run a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 on the narrowboat and a second on the shepherd's hut — both have been faultless across three winters. The Bluetooth monitoring alone has justified the cost several times over when diagnosing charging anomalies.

Worth noting: Renogy's own-brand controllers sit in a reasonable middle tier if Victron pricing is prohibitive. Not equivalent, but they at least publish meaningful specs and honour warranties through their UK operation.

The £38 saving rarely survives contact with a damaged battery bank.

@Spider been there, done that — lost a decent 200Ah Fogstar lithium to a dodgy no-name unit two summers ago. The BMS saved it from being a total write-off but it was a close thing.

What finally convinced me to just bite the bullet on a Victron SmartSolar was doing the maths properly. The cheap unit cost me £38 upfront plus the aggravation, whereas the Victron has been flawless running my garden office for 18 months straight.

One thing I'd add beyond what's already been said — look at whether the manufacturer actually has a UK support presence. When things go wrong at 11pm before a work-from-home day (ask me how I know), having actual documentation and a community like this one that knows the kit is worth a lot more than saving forty quid upfront.

Genuine MPPT tracking matters too, not just the "MPPT" label slapped on what's essentially a PWM controller.
