Been down this rabbit hole recently and thought it worth sharing here.

I've got a MultiPlus-II 48/5000 running ESS on the narrowboat's shore power setup — mainly as emergency backup when we're on a marina berth and the grid does something daft. Been eyeing up AC-coupling a second-hand Growatt string inverter to bolt some extra panels into the mix, but the grid outage behaviour is where it gets murky.

The core issue as I understand it: when the grid drops, the MultiPlus has to take over frequency shifting to curtail the Growatt's output and stop the batteries cooking. This is the frequency shift power control mechanism — Victron calls it the "AC-coupled PV" setup. Works well with certified inverters that respond to frequency deviations above 50.2Hz (MG50 profile in the UK).

What I'm not 100% sure on is whether the Growatt MIN 4200TL-XH specifically plays nicely with this. The MFR specs are vague and I've seen conflicting reports. Some say it works fine with the right grid code selected, others reckon it stays locked out post-outage and needs a manual restart.

Has anyone here actually run this specific Growatt model AC-coupled behind a MultiPlus-II during a genuine grid outage — not just simulated in ESS settings? Real-world behaviour is what I'm after.

Also curious whether Victron's compatibility list is keeping pace with Growatt's firmware updates, because that list feels like it lags by months sometimes.

Anyone with hands-on experience, particularly on a UK G98/G99 install, jump in — would be dead useful.

@Deano interesting setup — AC-coupling a Growatt grid-tie with a MultiPlus-II is doable but the frequency-shift load shedding (Victron's standard method) needs careful attention with Growatt inverters specifically.

Worth knowing:

  • Growatt MIN series uses a wider frequency window before it trips than some other brands, so you may find the MultiPlus struggles to curtail it fast enough under light battery loading
  • Check your ESS Assistant version — older builds had quirks with AC-coupled PV during islanding
  • The 50.2Hz / 51.8Hz frequency ramp behaviour needs configuring on the Growatt side if it supports it

On my narrowboat I run a simpler DC-coupled setup through a Victron SmartSolar, which sidesteps this entirely, but I know that's not always practical when the Growatt is already installed.

What firmware version is the MIN running? That matters quite a bit with Growatt's anti-islanding behaviour.

The frequency shifting is the key bit here — MultiPlus-II will push frequency up toward 52Hz when the batteries are full to throttle the Growatt back. Works in theory but Growatt's response curve isn't always tight. Worth checking your Growatt firmware is current, some older versions were sluggish reacting to freq shifts which caused overvoltage on the DC bus.

Also on a narrowboat you're probably dealing with fairly modest solar array size? The rule of 1 applies — your AC-coupled inverter output shouldn't exceed your MultiPlus's rated output. With a 4200TL you're cutting it close on a 5000.

Had similar headaches pairing kit on my setup before I standardised on Victron throughout. Mixed brands can work but you're always chasing edge cases.

What @Wayne1980 and @PennineNomad haven't touched on is the round-trip losses stacking up in this topology. You're losing ~4% through the Growatt inverting to AC, then the MultiPlus-II rectifying back to DC for battery charging — that's before your battery round-trip inefficiency on top.

For my shepherd's hut I tested AC-coupling a grid-tie briefly and ultimately rewired to DC-coupled via a Victron SmartSolar MPPT. Far cleaner energy path and the VE.Can integration with the MultiPlus-II is genuinely worth the hassle.

That said, if your panels are already wired to the Growatt and a rerun isn't feasible on a narrowboat, the AC-coupled route absolutely works — just make sure your Growatt firmware supports the EN50549 frequency response curve properly, otherwise frequency shifting is unreliable during sustained grid-down periods.

Good points all round. One thing worth flagging for a narrowboat specifically @Deano — mind your cable runs between the Growatt and the MultiPlus-II. AC-coupling adds complexity but on a boat you've also got the joy of vibration, condensation and cramped runs to contend with. I'd strongly recommend keeping those AC cables as short as practically possible and using proper marine-grade terminations throughout.

Also worth checking your Growatt's firmware version before you go too far down the integration rabbit hole — some earlier MIN TL-XH variants had quirks responding to the MultiPlus frequency shifting that were patched in later releases. Victron's own AC-coupling guide lists compatible firmware ranges, so worth cross-referencing before you assume it'll play nicely out of the box.
