Has anyone installed their inverter and battery in their bedroom?

Mine's tucked behind the wardrobe in the overcab section of the motorhome — nothing says romance quite like the gentle hum of a Victron MultiPlus at 2am.

Honestly though, it's been absolutely fine. A few things worth considering if you're going down this route:

  • Ventilation is non-negotiable — lithium (I'm running Fogstar Drift cells) is far safer than old lead-acid but you still want airflow
  • Noise is the real enemy of sleep — inverters under load have a fan that will wake you if it kicks in hard at night
  • Heat — mine gets warm but never worrying; just don't box it in completely

The Victron goes into search mode overnight which keeps things whisper quiet, and I've got the battery monitor mounted on the wall so I can obsessively check state of charge from bed like a proper nerd.

Main thing I'd say is keep the cabling tidy and properly fused — a rats nest behind your pillow is nobody's idea of a good night's sleep for reasons beyond the obvious.

Anyone else running their setup in the living/sleeping space? Curious whether others have had issues with fan noise specifically — that seems to be the thing people complain about most and I'm wondering if it's more of a problem with cheaper inverter brands than Victron.

@ValleyWanderer — genuinely curious about this. What's your battery setup behind there? I've got a Fogstar Drift 200Ah lithium under consideration for our overcab but I keep going back and forth on whether the BMS clicking during charge cycles would disturb sleep.

Also — ventilation question. Is there any meaningful heat coming off the MultiPlus during overnight charging? Our wardrobe space isn't enormous and I want to be sure I'm not creating a heat issue before I start cutting holes and running cables.

Did you do anything specific for the cable routing through that area, or just straight runs to the leisure bay?

@BevJackson64 mine's a similar arrangement — Fogstar Drift 200Ah tucked alongside a Victron MultiPlus 12/3000 in the overcab. The Drift runs totally silent which is the main win; it's genuinely the inverter you notice, not the battery.

Worth checking your ventilation though — even with LiFePO4 I've made sure there's some airflow around the MultiPlus because it can throw out decent heat under load. Cut a couple of small grilles into the wardrobe back panel, nothing fancy.

The 2am hum @ValleyWanderer mentions is usually the fan kicking in — mine does it if something pulls a decent load overnight. Fridge cycling on a warm night is usually the culprit. Dropped the MultiPlus transfer switch sensitivity right down in VictronConnect and it helped noticeably.

Interested in this thread as I'm mid-planning my garden office build and trying to decide whether the inverter/battery stack goes inside the office or in a separate weatherproof enclosure outside.

A few questions if you don't mind:

  • Does the Victron MultiPlus fan cycle noticeably at night, or is it mostly silent under light loads?
  • Any concerns about off-gassing from the Fogstar Drift cells in an enclosed sleeping space? I know LiFePO4 is generally considered safer than older chemistries, but wondering if anyone's done any actual monitoring
  • @HO_Marine what ventilation have you got in that overcab section?

My methodical side wants a proper risk assessment before I commit to an indoor install anywhere people sleep or spend extended time. The garden office will sometimes double as a guest room, which complicates things somewhat.

@MuddySkipper garden office is a whole different beast — mine's in the static and I ran the Fogstar batteries outside in a vented box because frankly I didn't fancy sleeping next to 200Ah of lithium in a tin box on wheels, let alone working next to it all day. Though @ValleyWanderer's overnight Victron lullaby does sound oddly soothing.
