Been down this rabbit hole recently while spec'ing out the battery bank for my shepherd's hut build. Heltec kept popping up in my research — particularly their active balancers, which seem to get decent write-ups compared to passive balancing setups that just burn off excess energy as heat.

My current thinking is pairing a Heltec active balancer with a Daly BMS on a 280Ah LiFePO4 pack (Fogstar cells). The active balancer transferring energy between cells rather than wasting it feels like the right approach when you're working with a fixed solar harvest — every watt counts on a small roof.

The spot welder side of things is interesting too. I've seen builds where people fabricate their own nickel strip connections rather than buying pre-assembled packs, and the cost savings look real — though I'd want to understand the failure modes before trusting my own welds on anything load-bearing.

A few questions I'd throw out to the room:

  • Anyone running Heltec balancers alongside Victron kit? Curious whether there's any communication/monitoring crossover or if they just live as separate layers
  • For the BMS tools specifically — are we talking hobbyist grade or something you'd trust in a permanent off-grid install?
  • Has anyone actually used their battery repair tools to revive degraded cells, or is that more theoretical than practical?

The price point makes it tempting to experiment, but I've already learned the hard way that cheap components in a DC system can get expensive very quickly when things go wrong. Would love to hear from anyone who's had these running through a full UK winter cycle.

@MuddyNomad good timing on this thread! I've been running a Heltec active balancer on my 16S LiFePO4 pack for about 18 months now and it's been solid. The inductive balancer rather than resistive makes a genuine difference — you're transferring energy between cells rather than just burning off the excess as heat, which matters when you're trying to squeeze every last watt-hour out of a shepherd's hut setup.

One thing worth noting: their balancers start working most effectively when cells drift beyond around 10-20mV difference, so don't expect miracles on a brand new well-matched pack straight away. Where they really shine is keeping an older or second-life pack in check.

What cell chemistry are you planning? That'll affect which balancer spec makes most sense.

Heltec balancers are fine until they're not — had one decide to enthusiastically redistribute energy into a dead cell on my static caravan bank at 2am, which was a fun diagnostic session in my pyjamas.

For a shepherd's hut where you're not checking it daily, I'd pair whatever balancer you choose with a halfway decent BMS that has proper cell-level voltage cutoffs — JK BMS or Daly at minimum. Heltec's own BMS units are a bit... optimistic on their protection specs in my experience.

Active balancing genuinely earns its keep on larger cell-count packs; on a small 4S LiFePO4 setup you'd barely notice the difference over passive. What cell count are you running @MuddyNomad?

@Rob1963 that "enthusiastically redistribute" comment made me laugh despite myself — seen similar. Had a Heltec active balancer on a 16s LiFePO4 pack and it was fine for months, then started doing weird things at top of charge. Swapped it for a Daly passive setup in the end, boring but predictable.

Honestly for a shepherd's hut @MuddyNomad, I'd think hard about whether active balancing is even necessary if your cells are reasonably matched to begin with. Good cells from Fogstar or a decent supplier, properly top-balanced before assembly, and a halfway decent BMS will see you right without the extra complexity. Active balancers earn their keep on larger banks where drift becomes a real problem over time. Small static setup? Probably overthinking it.

@Rob1963 that's a concern I've heard before — had something similar (different brand) on my motorhome build and it was a right pain to diagnose.

Quick question for the thread: has anyone paired a Heltec active balancer alongside a proper Victron BMS, or do people generally pick one approach? I'm spec'ing out a backup system for the house and wondering whether the active balancer becomes redundant if your BMS is doing its job properly, or whether they genuinely complement each other.

Also — are the Heltec balancers straightforward to set up for LiFePO4 specifically? I've seen some listed on AliExpress with settings that seem to default to a lithium-ion chemistry profile, which could be a problem if you don't catch it.

Would love to hear from anyone running them long-term on a static setup rather than a vehicle install.
