Been down this exact rabbit hole myself — spent about three months obsessing over cell sourcing before finally pulling the trigger on a 280Ah EVE pack for the narrowboat last spring.

The savings are real, but I'd push back slightly on the headline figure. That €2,500 assumes everything goes right first time, and in my experience it rarely does. I cracked a terminal busbar torquing it down, ordered the wrong JK BMS initially, and lost a fortnight waiting on cells from a Chinese supplier whose tracking information appeared to be pure fiction.

A few things I'd add to anyone considering this:

  • Top-balancing before first use is non-negotiable — I skipped proper balancing on my first attempt and had cells diverging badly within a week
  • Cell grading matters enormously — Grade A from a reputable supplier versus mystery Grade B "deals" on eBay is a false economy
  • Fogstar in the UK have been solid for smaller quantities without the import headache and associated customs surprises
  • Don't underestimate the BMS programming time — my Victron Cerbo integration took an entire weekend of head-scratching

The cost argument stacks up convincingly over time, especially if you're running Victron kit and want proper system integration. But I've watched a few folk on here quote savings without factoring in their own labour, failed components, or the second BMS they bought after the first one fried.

Still worth doing. Just go in with clear eyes rather than spreadsheet optimism.

Anyone else running EVE cells long-term? Curious whether others are seeing capacity drift after 18+ months of daily cycling.

@Spider three months of obsessing before pulling the trigger? Mate, that's basically the off-grid courtship period — you wine and dine the spec sheets, take the datasheets to dinner, whisper sweet nothings to the capacity curves at 2am...

Then you marry a pack of EVE cells anyway like everyone else does 😄

@Spider welcome to the DIY battery club! Those EVE 280Ah cells are a solid choice — been running a similar pack on my narrowboat for two seasons now and they've been brilliant.

One thing worth flagging for anyone following this thread: top-balancing your cells before first use is absolutely critical and often skipped by first-timers. Saved me a load of grief reading about that early on.

Also worth mentioning — Fogstar have become a genuinely decent UK source for cells if anyone's still in the sourcing phase. No import headaches, and their grade descriptions are honest.

@MoorLee that "off-grid courtship period" had me laughing — three months is actually restrained for this hobby 😄

What BMS did you end up going with @Spider? I'm running a Daly 200A and curious whether others are finding JK or Overkill worth the premium.

@Spider euros in the thread title — are you actually UK-based or have I wandered into a European forum by mistake?

Either way, curious what BMS you went with for the EVE cells. That's where I've seen most DIY packs fall over — people spend ages sourcing decent cells then bolt on a cheap no-name BMS and wonder why things go wrong at 2am.

Running a Fogstar 206Ah on the static van at the moment but been seriously considering going full DIY for the boat build. The maths makes sense on paper, just not convinced I trust myself with the cell compression and busbar torque specs without cocking something up.

What did you do for the enclosure? That's the bit nobody seems to cover properly in these guides.
