Bit of a related rabbit hole I've fallen down recently, so thought I'd throw it in here.

Started with a single 200W panel on the static caravan — just to keep the leisure batteries ticking over during winter. Fast forward 18 months and I've somehow ended up with four 375W panels wired up, and I'm now staring down the barrel of adding a fifth because I got a ridiculous deal on a clearance Renogy panel I couldn't refuse.

The question being: my Victron SmartSolar 100/30 is already slightly "overpanelled" by the book. Total theoretical input is around 1500W, controller is rated for 1000W on 24V. Victron's own literature does suggest you can oversize the array — they even account for it — but there's a difference between their suggested limits and what people are actually running in the real world.

From what I can gather, the controller simply clamps output once it hits rated amperage. You're not frying anything, you're just leaving harvest on the table during peak hours. Which, honestly, in a British summer is roughly... twenty minutes on a Tuesday.

So — has anyone pushed their MPPT noticeably beyond the rated panel wattage? I'm specifically curious about:

  • Thermal behaviour (my controller is mounted inside a cupboard, which I suspect is sub-optimal)
  • Whether Victron's warranty position becomes awkward
  • Any real-world data from UK installs where overcast conditions mean you rarely hit theoretical max anyway

Suspect the answer is "fine, don't panic" but I've been wrong before. Several times. Ask my first fuse setup.

@RetiredEngineer72 — classic scope creep, we've all been there.

The key figure to watch is your MPPT's input current limit, not just wattage. Most controllers will simply clip the array at their rated input current, so modest overpanelling (say, 20-25% above nameplate watts) is generally fine and actually beneficial in the UK — our irradiance is rarely hitting STC anyway.

Where it gets spicy is Voc in cold conditions. Panel Voc rises as temperature drops, and if that exceeds your controller's absolute maximum input voltage on a crisp January morning, you risk killing the unit instantly — no warning, no protection.

My Victron SmartSolar 100/30 runs a 480W array without complaint. Victron's MPPT calculator is genuinely worth using before you commit to anything. Don't eyeball it.

One thing worth adding: most MPPT datasheets will give you a maximum PV open-circuit voltage (Voc) alongside the input current limit. People often obsess over the wattage but forget that on a cold clear morning your panels can spike well above their rated Voc — string too many in series and you can fry the controller outright, no warning, no second chances.

A rough rule of thumb I use: stay within about 20-25% overpanelling on wattage if your Voc and current figures are safely within spec. The controller will simply clip excess power once it's happy, which is fine. But breach those voltage or current limits and you're into warranty-voiding territory at best. Which controller are you running? That'd help narrow down where your headroom actually sits.

Really relevant to my situation actually — planning a garden office build and debating whether to oversize the array on a smaller Victron SmartSolar from the start rather than buying up later.

What's the real-world risk if you exceed the rated input wattage but stay within the voltage and current limits? I've read that the controller just "clips" excess production, but is there any thermal concern with sustained overloading on a hot summer day? My roof orientation isn't ideal so I was thinking I could afford to oversize knowing I'd rarely hit peak simultaneously anyway — but that feels like I'm talking myself into something potentially dodgy.

Has anyone actually measured their controller temps during a genuine high-irradiance day with an oversized array?

@SaltyRigger snap — garden office here too. Went slightly oversized on my Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and it's been fine.

Real-world tip: panels rarely hit true STC output in the UK anyway. Overcast skies, suboptimal angles, bit of shade from next door's fence... you're almost never pulling theoretical max. So a bit of "overloading" on paper often just means you're actually running the controller properly on a decent summer day.

That said, don't go mad. Voc in cold weather is the one that'll actually bite you — that spikes higher than you'd expect on a frosty morning and that's what can genuinely damage the controller.
