How to debug a Multiplus 2

So I've got a Multiplus II 5000 running the shepherd's hut and it's been mostly solid — genuinely impressed with it — but I've had three weird cutouts in the last few months and I'm struggling to work out what's actually going on.

First time I got what I think was an overload fault, reset itself after a few minutes. Second time the whole thing just went dark, no error code I could find, came back after I cycled the power. Third time it threw an alarm I didn't recognise and the Cerbo GX just showed a general warning before clearing itself.

The frustrating thing is none of these have been repeatable and I can't see an obvious pattern — load doesn't seem unusually high, Fogstar batteries are showing healthy SOC each time, and the cabling's all been checked.

Questions I've got:

  • Is there a proper log I can pull from VictronConnect or VRM that shows historical faults rather than just current status?
  • Does the Multiplus II store error history onboard or does it only log if connected to a Cerbo?
  • Could temperature be a factor? The hut gets properly cold overnight in winter, wondering if the inverter is doing something odd during warm-up

I've had a look through the Victron documentation but it's a bit overwhelming and I can't always tell which bits apply to my firmware version. There's presumably a methodical way to go about this rather than just waiting for it to happen again and hoping I'm standing next to it when it does.

Anyone been through similar? Particularly interested if you've used VRM diagnostics to actually pin something like this down.

Hey @JA_Solar, welcome to the forum!

First thing I'd do is pull the VEConfigure logs if you haven't already — the Multiplus II keeps a decent event history that'll show you exactly what tripped it. You'll need a MK3-USB interface and VEConfigure 3 to access it properly.

Also worth checking: are these cutouts happening at similar times of day or under specific loads? Three in a few months suggests a pattern rather than a random fault. High inrush from a pump or fridge compressor can sometimes catch it out.

What's your battery bank — lithium or lead? And is it grid-tied or purely off-grid? Makes a big difference to where I'd point you next.

If you've got a Cerbo GX or Venus device connected, the VRM portal logs are absolutely golden for this kind of diagnosis. 🙂

@JA_Solar three cutouts over a few months on a shepherd's hut setup — that pattern rings a bell from when my narrowboat Multiplus was doing something similar last winter.

What caught me out was the AC input voltage dropping just low enough to trigger the transfer threshold, usually when something heavy kicked in on shore power simultaneously. The unit was "protecting" itself perfectly correctly, just invisibly unless you're watching.

If you've got a GX device or even just the VictronConnect Bluetooth dongle, dig into the Event History — it'll tell you exactly what the unit thought was happening at the moment it cut. No GX? The VEConfig route @PYW_VanLife mentioned will show you the assistant logs.

Also worth checking your AC input current limit setting — if it's set too conservatively it'll trip under load before you expect it to.

Great shout from @PYW_VanLife and @DerekDixon already. One thing worth adding — have a look at your battery temperature sensor readings if you're running lithium. I had almost identical intermittent cutouts on my cabin setup and it turned out the low temp cutoff was triggering on cold nights, even though the batteries weren't actually that cold. Dodgy sensor connection was giving false readings.

Also worth checking your AC input settings in VEConfigure — specifically the input current limit and weak AC tolerance settings. Shepherd's hut, are you on grid hookup or purely off-grid? If you've got any grid or generator input, fluctuating voltage can cause the Multiplus to disconnect if the tolerances are set too tight.

The GX device logs (if you've got a Cerbo or similar) will give you timestamps that might help pinpoint what's actually triggering it.

Three cutouts in a few months on a shepherd's hut screams "grid transfer relay throwing a wobble when something beefy kicks in" to me — had the exact same mystery on my own Multiplus II until I caught it red-handed via a Cerbo GX logging the AC input voltage dipping just before handover.

Chuck a Cerbo or even a cheap Raspberry Pi with Venus OS on it and let it babysit the logs 24/7 — you'll have your culprit within a week, guaranteed.
