Humsienk 12V 150Ah LiFePO4 Bad BMS?

Had something similar with a no-name 150Ah a couple of years back in my shepherd's hut setup. BMS kept cutting out under load, turned out it was the low-temperature cutoff triggering way too early — like at 8°C when it shouldn't have kicked in until around 0°C.

Few things worth checking:

  • What's the actual load when it cuts? High inrush from an inverter can trip the overcurrent protection even if steady-state draw looks fine
  • Is it cutting on charge or discharge? Makes a big difference narrowing it down
  • What are the resting voltages on individual cells? If one cell is drifting low the BMS will protect early

The Humsienk brand doesn't ring many bells for me — tends to be these rebranded Chinese cells where the BMS spec sheet is basically fiction. Not saying it's dead but the protection thresholds might just be badly calibrated from the factory.

Honestly if you can get a Bluetooth BMS module or even just a basic cell monitor on it you'll see exactly what's happening. I ended up ditching my dodgy unit and went Fogstar Drift in the end — haven't looked back.

What's your charging source? If it's solar through a Victron controller the charge profile settings might also be worth double-checking — seen people accidentally set absorption too high and the BMS panics.

Anyone else had hands-on with Humsienk specifically? Curious whether this is a known issue with that batch.

@AnneWatson raises a really important point about low-temp cutoffs — worth expanding on for anyone who finds this thread later.

Many budget LiFePO4 cells (and the Humsienk brand sits firmly in that category) ship with BMS boards calibrated conservatively, sometimes cutting at 5°C or even higher. In a shepherd's hut or static caravan over winter, that's genuinely problematic.

Before assuming BMS failure, I'd check:

  • Actual cell temperature using a decent IR thermometer
  • Whether the cutoff is temperature-related vs. true overcurrent
  • BMS communication if it has Bluetooth — some budget units do

On my narrowboat setup I've had similar grief. Switched to Fogstar Drift cells with a Victron SmartShunt and the data logging made diagnosis straightforward immediately.

If it's genuinely a faulty BMS rather than miscalibration, replacement boards from Daly or JBD are reasonably priced and well-documented — no need to bin the whole unit.

@AnneWatson knows what she's talking about — been there myself with a mystery-brand battery that decided -2°C was basically the Arctic tundra and shut everything down. Brilliant. There I am in the middle of a storm with no power to my emergency backup system, wrapped in a blanket, questioning every life choice that led me to this hobby.

@AnneWatson had the same issue in my van last winter — BMS cutting out when it wasn't even that cold. Turned out the temperature sensor was poorly positioned right against the case rather than the cells, so it was reading ambient instead of actual cell temp.

Worth checking where the sensor is physically sitting inside the unit if you can safely open it.

Also — has anyone actually found the temperature cutoff spec sheet for Humsienk? I can't find anything online. With Fogstar or a reputable brand you at least get proper documentation. This is exactly the problem with budget no-names: when something goes wrong you're just guessing.

What load were you running when it cut out? My setup kicked off under about 800W — curious whether yours is threshold-related rather than purely temperature.

Really interesting thread — @AnneWatson's low-temp point is spot on and worth adding to.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: even if the ambient temperature reads fine, the cell temperature sensor on budget BMS units is often positioned poorly — sometimes literally touching the casing rather than the cells themselves. So your BMS thinks it's colder than it actually is.

Worth grabbing a cheap IR thermometer and checking your actual cell surface temp when it cuts out. Had exactly this with my motorhome backup setup — cells were perfectly happy at 8°C but the BMS was reading 1°C and shutting everything down.

If you're handy with a multimeter, can you check what voltage the BMS is cutting out at? That'd help distinguish between a low-temp fault versus an undervoltage issue — two very different problems with different fixes.

My static caravan setup had a dodgy Humsienk-ish clone do exactly this — swapped it out for a Fogstar Drift and haven't looked back, but before I did, I stuck a cheap £8 Amazon temperature sensor directly on the BMS board rather than trusting whatever reading the app was showing, and the difference was wild — the BMS was reading 4°C warmer than reality because the sensor was buried under insulation foam. Worth checking if your BMS app figure actually matches what's happening at the cells themselves before assuming the cutoff threshold is the whole problem.
