Been thinking about this lately as I'm mid-way through rewiring my boat setup and dreading the first power-on moment 😅

So what's everyone's go-to sequence when commissioning a fresh system? I've seen loads of conflicting advice online and honestly it stresses me out a bit.

My current thinking for my 12V boat install:

  1. Batteries first (with main isolator off)
  2. Connect Victron MPPT to battery before panels
  3. Then hook up the panels
  4. Inverter/charger last

But I'm less confident about where the BMS fits in — mine's a Fogstar Drift 100Ah with its own internal BMS so maybe it's simpler than a separate unit?

The thing that really trips me up is fusing order. Do you fit all your fuses before energising anything, or leave certain ones out until you've confirmed no shorts? I've heard both camps argued pretty passionately.

Anyone running a more complex setup — like a split bank or an inverter/charger doing both solar and shore power simultaneously — what's your sequence? Presumably there's more that can go wrong there.

Also curious whether anyone uses a multimeter to do continuity checks at each stage before closing any circuit. Feels like the sensible approach but adds ages to the process.

Not a three-phase system obviously (this is a boat not a small power station 😂) but the general commissioning logic must be similar regardless of scale.

@BoatLouise classic anxiety moment that 😅

My sequence on the boat:

  1. Batteries first (with a pre-charge resistor across the main fuse if you've got big capacitors downstream)
  2. Victron MPPT - connect it before the panels
  3. Panels last - live DC is unforgiving if you get it backwards
  4. Inverter/charger only once everything else is reading sensibly on the BMS

Main thing people skip is checking polarity on every connection before anything goes live. Sounds obvious but I've seen it bite experienced sparks.

Also worth putting a clamp meter on before that first full load draw - just confirms your cable sizing isn't going to get exciting.

What BMS are you running? That'll affect whether you need to do anything special before the battery bank comes online.

Panels last is the big one people skip — caught me out first time with my cabin setup, MPPT went into fault because I had the array connected before the battery 🙃

Rough order I follow:

  1. Battery bank (fused)
  2. Victron MPPT — battery side only
  3. Loads/inverter
  4. Array strings

Actually... step 3 and 4 might swap depending on your inverter. Some Victron kit wants to see the solar input before loads, can't remember exactly. Worth checking the manual for your specific unit tbh.

Pre-charge resistor on the inverter is non-negotiable if you've got big capacitors on it. Learned that the hard way 😬

Good shout from @MarineGaz on the pre-charge resistor — that's saved me from some nasty inrush current situations when connecting the Victron Multiplus.

My sequence after batteries:

  1. Inverter/charger (still off, just connected)
  2. MPPT controller — wired but shaded or isolated
  3. DC loads one at a time, fuses in first
  4. Shore power / generator if applicable
  5. Panels last, exactly as @EcoFlow_Gal says

The bit people miss is letting the MPPT initialise and read the battery voltage before panels go live. Victron SmartSolar especially — give it 30 seconds to settle or you'll get spurious faults on first boot.

For EV charging integration specifically, I always commission the EVSE completely separately and only tie it into the system bus once everything else is confirmed stable.

Good thread. My sequence on the Fogstar/Victron setup was roughly:

  1. Batteries
  2. MPPT (no panels yet)
  3. Inverter/loads
  4. Panels last

One thing I'd add — worth doing a quick voltage check at each stage before moving on. Caught a dodgy connection on my cabin build that way before anything went pop.

Also double-check your MPPT input voltage limit before those panels go on. Easy to forget if you've been adding strings since you last looked at the spec sheet.
