Installation neuve dans C-car / Orion semble mort

Had something similar happen after a fresh install in my motorhome last year — brand new Victron Orion-Tr Smart just sitting there doing absolutely nothing after I wired everything up. Properly deflating moment after spending a weekend on the install.

Turned out I'd not got the input voltage quite right — the Orion has a minimum start voltage threshold and my starter battery was just sitting low enough after a run of cold mornings to stop it kicking in. Worth checking that first before assuming it's dead.

A few things worth ruling out:

• Input voltage at the unit itself — measure directly at the terminals, not just at the battery
• VE.Direct or Bluetooth connection — sometimes the app shows it as offline when it's actually fine, just not configured
• Enable/disable pin — if you've wired an ignition sense wire, check that's actually getting 12v when the engine's running
• Fusing on the input side — blown fuse can make it look completely dead

My setup's purely emergency backup so I don't use the Orion constantly, but when it does play up it's usually something daft like the above rather than the unit itself being faulty.

What's your input voltage reading at the unit when the engine's running? And are you using the isolated or non-isolated version? Makes a difference to how you'd expect it to behave.

@BorderOffGrid same thing happened to me during my cabin build. Turned out the Orion was in storage mode — needs a solid 13.2V+ on the input before it'll wake up. Worth checking your input voltage with a multimeter first before assuming it's dead.

Also double-check the VE.Direct or Bluetooth connection in the Victron Connect app — sometimes you need to manually enable the charger output in settings. It's not on by default in some firmware versions.

One more thing — polarity on the remote on/off pin can catch people out. Accidentally bridging that wrong keeps it locked off permanently until you sort it.

@BorderOffGrid worth checking whether your alternator output is actually reaching the Orion's input terminals under load. A common gotcha with modern vehicles — particularly anything post-2016 with a smart/variable alternator — is that the ECU drops charge voltage to 12.8V or lower during normal running to reduce fuel consumption. The Orion-Tr Smart has a default input threshold of around 13.2V before it'll engage, so it just sits there looking dead when actually it's behaving exactly as designed.

You can verify this with a multimeter directly at the input terminals whilst the engine is running. If you're seeing sub-13V, the fix is either lowering the input voltage threshold in the VictronConnect app, or fitting a dedicated BMS-style trigger wire if your van has a D+ terminal.

@BorderOffGrid had almost the exact same saga on my narrowboat last spring — spent the better part of an afternoon convinced I'd fried a brand new unit.

What nobody mentioned in the manual was the engine detect threshold. By default the Orion-Tr Smart won't engage until it sees something like 13.2V on the input. If your alternator is lazy at idle, or you've got a long thin cable run with voltage drop eating into that, it'll just sit there completely silent.

Worth popping into the VictronConnect app and checking the engine detection voltage setting — you can lower it slightly if your alternator warms up slowly. Also check your input fuse is the right rating; mine had a marginal fuse that looked fine visually but was dropping voltage under any real current.

Methodical elimination rather than assuming the worst.

@BorderOffGrid classic one this. Check your remote on/off wire if you've got one connected — caught me out badly on my motorhome build. Had mine wired to a switch I thought was on but the polarity was reversed so the Orion just sat there in permanent shutdown. Dead silent, no LEDs, nothing.

Also worth pulling up the VictronConnect app and looking at the actual input voltage threshold settings. Default cutoff can be higher than you'd expect, so if your starter battery is slightly marginal the Orion just refuses to wake up entirely.

Don't assume the unit's faulty yet — these things are solid kit in my experience. Rule out the wiring gremlins first before you start the returns process.
