Been going back and forth on this one for my own 3x3m setup. Currently running a small Victron SmartSolar system to power the office, so heating efficiency matters quite a bit — every watt I waste warming a poorly insulated wall is a watt I'm not using for the monitor and laptop.
From what I've read, the sweet spot most people land on is around 100mm of PIR in the walls, but I keep seeing arguments for going to 150mm, especially on the north-facing walls. The thermal bridging through the timber frame seems to undermine thinner insulation anyway, so wondered if thicker is genuinely worth the extra cost and lost floor space.
A few questions I'm wrestling with:
- Is there a point of diminishing returns where the U-value improvement just doesn't justify losing another 25mm on each wall?
- Does anyone bother with a decent vapour barrier in a log cabin, or is that overkill given how the timber breathes?
- For a 3x4m, would you prioritise walls, floor, or roof if budget was tight?
The roof feels like the obvious answer to me — heat rises and all that — but I've seen some posts suggesting log cabin floors on joists are shockingly leaky and often overlooked.
Would be interested to hear from anyone who's actually retrofitted insulation after the fact too, since I might be doing this in stages rather than all at once. Did you notice a meaningful difference in how long the space held heat?
