Insulating a stone outbuilding for winter use - worth the hassle?

Done it with my static setup — stone barn conversion, about 40 years of Welsh wind trying to get through the walls.

Honest answer: yes, but only if you do it properly. Half-measures are worse than nothing because you end up with condensation nightmares. Stone walls are basically giant cold thermal masses that'll cheerfully suck the heat out of any space you try to warm.

What actually worked for me:

  • Internal studwork wall with 100mm Rockwool (keep that air gap from the stone!)
  • Vapour barrier — don't skip this, seriously
  • Insulated the floor before anything else — massive difference
  • Decent door seals, because our original ones were basically decorative

Heating-wise I run a small woodburner plus a Victron MultiPlus keeping a bit of background electric heat going overnight from the solar bank. Stone holds warmth reasonably well once you've actually got it up to temperature — that bit is genuinely useful.

The faff factor is real though. Expect a full weekend minimum, probably two. And if your outbuilding is listed or in a conservation area, double-check before you start battering insulation boards everywhere — ask me how I know 😬

What's the size of your space? That changes the calculus quite a bit. Tiny shed-sized thing is a different job to a proper outbuilding.

@KevClark really useful to hear from someone who's actually done it.

Quick question — how are you handling the moisture side of things? I've got a small stone cabin I use for emergency backup storage (batteries, Victron kit, etc.) and I'm torn between insulating it properly for occasional overnight use versus keeping it breathable so condensation doesn't wreck my equipment.

Did you go with insulated render on the outside, or internal stud wall with a vapour barrier? I've read conflicting things about whether vapour barriers and stone walls actually play nicely together in Wales specifically, given the rain.

Also wondering whether the heating load dropped significantly once you'd done it — trying to work out if a small Victron Multiplus setup could realistically keep the space warm enough overnight without absolutely hammering my battery bank.

@KevClark good timing on this thread — I've been wrestling with exactly this on my shepherds hut and a stone outbuilding I'm converting for battery storage.

Couple of practical questions:

  • What insulation did you actually use on the inner walls? I've seen people recommend PIR board but stone breathability is a concern
  • Did you go dry-lining straight off the stone or did you batten it out first?

My main worry with the battery store is thermal mass working against me in winter — stone holds cold, so even a decent insulation job might mean the space takes ages to warm up, which is bad news for LiFePO4 performance below about 5°C.

Also @PartnerNomad raises a valid point on moisture — I'd imagine PIR without adequate vapour management on stone could trap damp behind the boards and cause real problems long-term.

@KevClark makes a crucial point about half-measures — I learned this the hard way with my backup shelter setup.

Stone walls are notorious for thermal bridging and interstitial condensation if you just slap insulation against them. What actually worked for me was a 50mm service void between the stone and the insulation board, with vapour-open membrane on the warm side. Counterintuitive but the wall needs to breathe.

The real game-changer for winter survivability though was sorting the battery bank thermal management first — LiFePO4 below 5°C won't accept charge properly, so if your Victron setup is in the outbuilding, insulation isn't optional, it's functional.

@ExFirefighter — shepherds huts have the additional headache of the chassis acting as a cold bridge straight into the floor. Rockwool batts between the joists with foil-faced PIR underneath sorted mine.

@KevClark spot on about the half-measures thing. Did my stone outbuilding two summers ago and the moisture issue nearly did me in — @PartnerNomad that's the real question to nail down first tbh.

I went with a ventilated cavity before the insulation layer. Bit more work but stopped the damp tracking through completely. Stone walls breathe and if you fight that you'll just move the problem somewhere worse.

On the energy side — properly insulated, my little 400W Renogy setup actually keeps the space liveable through winter now. Before insulating, I was throwing heat at a sieve basically. The battery bank (Fogstar cells) holds overnight no problem now whereas before it couldn't keep up.

Main thing I'd add: don't skimp on the floor. Lost so much heat that way before I sorted it. Seems obvious in hindsight 🤦
