Been down a similar rabbit hole with my garden office build, so this caught my attention.
When I was planning where to mount my Victron Multiplus 12V 2000VA (same unit), I spent an embarrassing amount of time on Victron's own documentation before I felt confident. The short version: airflow runs from the bottom, exhausts out the back/top, and the cooling fins need clear space to breathe. Victron actually specifies minimum clearances in the manual — I think it's around 10cm on the exhaust side — and those aren't suggestions.
Mounting it on its side is the bit that would make me nervous. The fan and thermal management are designed around a specific orientation. Victron does permit side-mounting in certain configurations, but the unit needs to know which way it's oriented so it can adjust fan behaviour accordingly — there's a DIP switch or setting for that depending on firmware version.
The real danger with being wedged into a hot corner against a cabinet wall is thermal shutdown. You might not notice for months, then on a heavy load day — running a kettle, a laptop, whatever — it just cuts out. That's the unit protecting itself, but it's not ideal.
Worth your van builder checking:
- Is the orientation set correctly in the configuration?
- Is there actually 10cm+ clearance on all required sides?
- Is the cabinet ventilated, or is it essentially a sealed box?
Has anyone here done a proper side-mount install and monitored temperatures over time? Curious whether the real-world thermals are as bad as the theory suggests or whether there's more headroom than Victron's conservative specs imply.
