Been running a Victron MultiPlus 48/3000 in my static caravan for about three years now, and the fan noise has gradually become more of an issue, especially during summer months when ambient temps creep up. It's not constant—mainly kicks in when I'm running the kettle or microwave—but it's loud enough to be annoying when trying to sleep in the van, particularly in the evenings when everything else is quiet.
I've got decent ventilation around the unit (mounted in a cupboard with vents top and bottom), so it's not a blocked airflow problem. The inverter's working normally otherwise—no error codes, battery voltage stable at 48V nominal.
A few things I'm wondering about:
Has anyone had success with external temperature control? I've read about some setups using external thermostats to control auxiliary cooling fans, essentially forcing cooler air circulation before the internal fan needs to engage. Seems like it could be a reasonable retrofit project.
What about acoustic enclosures? I've seen some people mention dampening boxes, but I'm concerned about heat management. Presumably you'd need proper airflow design so you're not just creating an oven around the unit.
Are newer inverters noticeably quieter? I've been looking at the Fogstar units or maybe a Victron Multiplus II, but can't justify replacing a perfectly functional inverter just for noise reduction unless there's a significant real-world difference.
Currently considering just accepting it as part of off-grid living, but figured I'd ask before dismissing the issue. What've others done in similar situations?
