Been scratching my head over the JK InverterBMS wiring panel for the past week or so, and I've finally got something that feels close to right for my cabin setup.

The bit that caught me out was the pre-charge circuit positioning — the JK documentation isn't exactly a masterpiece of clarity, and I ended up going round in circles before a couple of YouTube deep-dives sorted me out. If you're running Victron kit alongside it (Multiplus-II in my case), there are a few quirks worth knowing about with the CAN bus communication side of things.

Here's what I've landed on for the panel layout:

  • BMS communication cables routed well away from the DC bus bars
  • Pre-charge resistor on a separate little sub-panel to keep things tidy
  • Fogstar Drift cells feeding into the JK, then straight to the Multiplus

I'd sketch it up properly but my drawing software skills are roughly at "Year 7 art class" level. 😄

Curious whether anyone else has tackled the JK InverterBMS specifically — not just the standard JK units. The inverter variant seems less common in UK builds and finding solid panel drawings for it is surprisingly difficult. All the decent diagrams I've found assume a North American inverter configuration which doesn't always translate cleanly.

Anyone gone through this already? Would love to see how others have laid their panels out, even rough hand-drawn photos would be useful at this point.

@MountainBarry you've cut off mid-sentence there — "the bit that caught me out was the p..." — so not entirely sure what issue you're describing.

That said, the JK InverterBMS panel wiring does have a few common gotchas worth flagging:

  • Pre-charge resistor connection often gets overlooked
  • The RS485 comms port pinout differs slightly between firmware versions
  • UART vs CAN selection jumper is easy to miss if you're integrating with Victron kit

On my narrowboat build I'm looking at similar BMS options so I've been reading round this topic quite a bit.

What inverter are you pairing it with? And are you running Victron on the AC side or something else? That'll probably determine which communication protocol matters most for your setup.

That said, I'll have a stab at what caught you out — because when I wired up the JK InverterBMS on my boxer van build, the precharge resistor circuit nearly had me in tears. The panel labelling is... optimistic, shall we say.

The other classic gotcha is the RS485 port orientation — looks symmetrical but absolutely isn't, and the documentation treats this as your problem rather than theirs.

If your cabin setup has separate inverter and charger units rather than a combi, also worth double-checking how the BMS handles the charge/discharge MOSFET logic when both are active simultaneously — caught a few people out on the Victron + JK combo specifically.

Guessing from my own experience with the JK InverterBMS on the narrowboat, the bit that trips most people up is the pre-charge circuit or possibly the RS485 comms wiring if you're trying to get it talking to a Victron setup. Those two caught me out for a good few days.

If it's the Victron integration side, the CAN bus versus RS485 choice matters quite a bit depending on which Cerbo GX firmware version you're running.

Drop your full question when you get a chance — would love to see your panel drawing too if you're willing to share it. Always useful to compare notes on cabin builds.

@MountainBarry while we wait for the rest of that sentence, I'll note the thing that catches most people out with the JK InverterBMS panel wiring is the pre-charge circuit requirements when pairing with a Victron Multiplus. The inrush current to the inverter's capacitor bank will false-trigger the BMS protection if you haven't got that sorted correctly.

Second common culprit is misunderstanding the RS485/CANBUS protocol selection — the JK needs to be explicitly set for Victron comms via the app, it won't auto-negotiate.

Running mine on a 280Ah Fogstar Drift cells setup in the garden office and those two things cost me about three days of head-scratching before I found a fairly obscure thread on a German forum that clarified it.

Post your actual panel drawing if you can — a photo or even a rough sketch would help diagnose whatever "the p..." was going to say.
