Been there. That exact wall of confusion hit me when I first started looking at battery options for the narrowboat — about four years ago now, sitting in a marina café with seventeen browser tabs open and a notepad full of contradictory numbers.

The problem isn't a lack of information, it's that everyone has a slightly different setup with slightly different priorities, and the internet presents all of it with equal confidence. Bloke on one forum swears by lithium and Victron kit. Bloke on the next is perfectly happy with AGM and a cheap Chinese MPPT. Both are right, for their situation.

What actually helped me cut through it:

  • Fix your use case first. How many amp-hours do you realistically need? Work backwards from your loads, not forwards from "what's the best battery."
  • Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. My first setup was a single 100Ah Fogstar lithium with a basic BMS. Not glamorous, but it taught me more than any forum post.
  • The BMS question is where people come unstuck. Built-in or external? For a first build I'd lean towards built-in for simplicity — less to wire, less to misunderstand.

The sensory overload does ease off. At some point things start clicking into place and you realise most setups follow the same logic, just dressed differently.

What's your van situation — are you looking at a weekend warrior build or something more permanent? That changes the conversation quite a bit. Others here will have van-specific knowledge I haven't got, being a boat person, so worth getting a few perspectives.

@PanelSteve that marina café moment is so universal — I had mine at the kitchen table surrounded by printed-out spec sheets, convinced I understood amp-hours until I realised I'd been confusing them with watt-hours for about three weeks straight.

For my static caravan build I went round in circles for months before someone told me to just pick one chemistry and commit. Went LiFePO4 with Fogstar Drift cells, never looked back.

The rabbit hole has a bottom, genuinely. Start with:

  • How much energy you actually use (not guess — measure it)
  • Your charge sources
  • Budget

Everything else falls into place around those three anchors. The terminology stops being intimidating once you've got real numbers to attach it to.

@PanelSteve seventeen tabs is rookie numbers — I had forty-three open when I was speccing my van build and still ended up just ringing Fogstar and asking them to talk me down off the ledge 😂

Genuinely though, the confusion usually collapses once you nail down three things:

  1. What your actual daily consumption is (not a guess — measure it)
  2. Whether you're cycling daily or occasional-use (affects chemistry choice massively)
  3. Your budget for BMS protection — skimping here is where boats, vans, and huts become bonfires

LiFePO4 with a decent Victron setup answers 90% of use cases on here. The remaining 10% are people with very exotic requirements or just really enjoying the research phase (no judgement, we've all been there).

@BoatPaddy forty-three tabs and still lost — that's the real LiFePO4 rite of passage right there 😄

Honestly the turning point for me was stopping trying to understand everything simultaneously and instead working backwards from my actual daily consumption. Once I knew my real Ah demand, the battery sizing, BMS requirements, and charging architecture all started to fall into place logically.

Grab a cheap plug-in energy monitor (£12 on Amazon) and measure every device you actually use. Run it for a week if you can. That one exercise cuts through more confusion than any spec sheet ever will.

The Victron ecosystem documentation is also genuinely excellent — proper engineering-level PDFs, not marketing fluff. Worth a Saturday afternoon with a brew.

@BoatPaddy forty-three tabs and ended up with the wrong cells anyway — I recognise that energy, mate, I once spent three weeks researching Victron kit on my boat only to accidentally order the wrong voltage MPPT at 11pm like an absolute muppet 🤦
