: Kan ik twee Orion XS-laders aansluiten achter één BatteryProtect 220A

Bit of a niche one but curious if anyone's tried this setup...

Running a Transit-based camper build myself and I've got a Victron BatteryProtect 220A sitting between the alternator feed and my leisure bank. Currently running a single Orion XS 12/12-50A behind it with no issues, but I'm seriously thinking about adding a second unit to get 100A total into the lithium — especially on longer drives when I want to actually top up properly rather than just trickle.

Main thing I'm not sure about is whether the BatteryProtect can comfortably handle two Orions running simultaneously. 50A each is only 100A on paper, but I've read there can be inrush spikes when they kick in. 220A should have headroom, but stacking two converters feels like it might be pushing it depending on what else is on the circuit.

Anyone actually done this? A few things I'm wondering:

  • Do both Orions need to be wired in parallel before the BatteryProtect, or after?
  • Is there any benefit to triggering them in a staggered sequence to avoid simultaneous inrush?
  • Worth going up to the BatteryProtect 280A instead if I add the second unit?

My alternator's smart (similar spec to the 230A Ford unit) so I'm not worried about killing it — the Orions handle that side of things nicely. Just want to make sure the protection side of the circuit is solid.

Anyone with Victron experience on this, fire away 👇

@BatteryMark - done almost exactly this on my Sprinter build, though I'll be honest it took me an embarrassing amount of head-scratching before I got it right.

The BatteryProtect 220A is load-side only - Victron are quite firm about this. Running charging sources through it causes back-EMF issues that'll eventually kill it. It's not rated for bidirectional current in that configuration.

What you actually want is the Orion XS units connecting directly to the battery, bypassing the BatteryProtect entirely. The BP sits on your output side protecting loads.

Two Orion XS chargers in parallel is fine though - they'll share the current nicely and Victron's own docs confirm it. I'd just make sure your cabling is symmetrical length between both units or you'll get uneven loading.

Check the Victron Community forum too, there's a cracking thread on exactly this topology.

Not sure this thread title has translated properly — looks like it came in as Dutch? Assuming the question is about running two Orion XS chargers behind a single BatteryProtect 220A.

Worth checking the combined inrush current of both Orion XS units simultaneously — the BP220A has a 220A continuous rating but the peak inrush on startup can trip the protection logic unexpectedly. Victron's own documentation is vague on this.

In my static setup I've seen BatteryProtects behave oddly when multiple DC-DC chargers initialise at the same moment. Staggered startup helped considerably.

Also worth noting: the BatteryProtect is load-side only by design — some people wire it incorrectly on charger inputs and then wonder why it misbehaves. Check your topology carefully before assuming the hardware is at fault.

@DucatoProject yeah the Dutch title slipped through like a dodgy EU import — fitting really, given Victron's Amsterdam origins.

Two Orion XS units behind a single BatteryProtect 220A is technically fine on paper, but watch your combined inrush current on startup — learned that the hard way in my van build when two chargers waking up simultaneously threw a right strop at the BP. Stagger the enable signals if you can.

@BatteryMark curious what your actual load situation looks like on the 220A BP — that's the bit I keep getting stuck on with my static caravan setup (different context I know, but same question around current handling).

Are both Orion XS units running simultaneously or is there some kind of staggered trigger happening? Because if they're both kicking in at once you're potentially looking at combined inrush that could cause the BP to do something odd.

Also — is the BP in the load output or input side of the Orions? That changes things quite a bit doesn't it.

Victron's documentation is honestly a bit vague on cascaded setups like this. Have you had a look through their Community forum? Someone usually has a .pdf buried in a thread somewhere that actually answers the specific question.
