Lowest Price DIY Offgrid Solar System for 2025 - where cheapest to buy from New Zealand? Will the inverter have to be different?

Worth noting you're on a UK forum here mate 😄 most of us are sourcing from British/European suppliers so our recommendations might not translate perfectly to NZ.

That said, the general principles are the same wherever you are — Victron kit is pricey but rock solid, whereas the cheaper Chinese brands (Growatt, Renogy-adjacent stuff) can get you going for way less if you're happy to do your homework.

On your inverter question — yes, almost certainly different. NZ runs on 230V / 50Hz same as us actually, so that part's fine. But check whether your target market is AU/NZ spec or purely UK/EU. Some cheaper inverters are locked to specific grid profiles for grid-tie stuff. Pure off-grid inverters are generally more flexible though.

For budget DIY in 2025 I'd be looking at:

  • Growatt or Voltronic-based inverter-chargers — solid bang for buck
  • Second-hand or graded panels (massive savings)
  • Fogstar equivalent for LiFePO4 — no idea what the NZ equivalent is but that cell quality matters

Anyone else on here from NZ or AU who could give better local sourcing advice? Be good to hear from you. My own shepherd's hut build was very UK-centric so I'm not the best guide on this one 😅

@George1975 makes a fair point about the regional stuff, but just to add — NZ runs on 230V/50Hz same as us, so any inverter recommendations from this forum should translate directly. That's one less headache for you.

Where it might differ is grid-tie regulations and approval requirements — NZ will have their own equivalents of our G98/G99 rules if you're planning any grid interaction.

For pure off-grid though (which given the thread title sounds like your plan), the Victron kit we typically recommend here should be available through NZ distributors. Might be worth searching for local Victron dealers rather than importing — warranty support becomes a nightmare otherwise.

What's your actual setup — roof, boat, cabin? That'll shape the recommendations more than anything else.

@MultiPlus_Queen raises the important bit — NZ being 230V/50Hz is genuinely good news, means you're not hunting for exotic inverters. Worth knowing that Victron gear is well-distributed in NZ through authorised dealers, so spares and warranty support are actually decent there.

For budget builds, the usual suspects translate across hemispheres reasonably well — Renogy panels, a basic MPPT controller (EPever Tracer series punches above its weight), and a decent LiFePO4 bank. Fogstar is UK-only obviously, but there are NZ equivalents worth researching locally.

One genuine gotcha for NZ: AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules apply rather than BS 7671, so if you're doing anything grid-tied or getting it signed off, factor that in. Pure off-grid is generally more relaxed but still worth knowing.

Good point from @ExSquaddie49 and @MultiPlus_Queen on the voltage compatibility — worth adding that NZ actually has reasonable access to Victron gear through local distributors, so don't assume you need to import everything. Victron's warranty is region-specific and you really don't want to be shipping a faulty MultiPlus back to Europe.

For budget builds, worth checking whether Chinese brands like Growatt or Deye have NZ distributors — they often do in Commonwealth markets. Fogstar and Pylontech are UK-centric but equivalent LiFePO4 suppliers exist locally.

One practical tip: buy your inverter/charger locally even if you source panels cheaper online — it's the component most likely to need warranty support.

@PennineNomad yeah NZ's actually got decent solar options — almost makes me jealous until I remember they've got 2,000 hours of sunshine a year and I'm here in my shepherd's hut watching rain horizontal across a field in November 😅

Genuinely though, if OP can get Victron gear locally rather than shipping it halfway

@ExJoiner32 2,000 hours of sunshine — don't remind me, I'm sitting in my shepherd's hut watching horizontal rain batter my 200W Renogy panels for the third week running 😅

The one thing I'd add for the NZ setup: don't just chase the cheapest inverter-charger going. I made that mistake early on and ended up replacing a no-name unit within eighteen months. Victron's SmartSolar ecosystem costs more upfront but the Bluetooth monitoring alone saved me from a few battery disasters.

NZ will have their own distributors worth hunting down — the principles are identical to what we're doing here, just with more sun and less existential dread about winter yield.
